Box Score CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, ILL. – Illinois utilized a key two-out rally midway through the contest to take the Tuesday night win over Indiana State at Illinois Field, 6-3.
Illinois (23-19) took the lead after a four-run bottom of the fifth as the Fighting Illini took advantage of a Cam McDonald two-run single, while Kellen Sarver added an RBI double in the inning to give the home team the 6-2 lead. The Sycamores (22-14) took a run back in the sixth as
Josue Urdaneta scored on a wild pitch and Indiana State put runners on base in eighth but were unable to rally back in the loss.
Randall Diaz doubled for the Sycamores as six different Indiana State players recorded hits on the day.
Luis Hernandez brought home ISU's lone RBI in the game, while Diaz, Urdaneta, and
Keegan Watson all scored.
Jake Ridgway went the first 3.2 innings in taking the no-decision on the mound for the Sycamores. The redshirt senior allowed four hits and two runs while striking out one.
Brennyn Cutts (2-2) went 0.2 innings with two runs coming across in his time on the mound, while
Joey Hurth and
Raine Richter closed out the contest.
Danny Doligale, Jacob Campbell, and Kellen Sarver all doubled for Illinois as the Illini evened the season series with the Sycamores. Doligale and Campbell both scored twice in the win.
Ryan Kutt (2-2) went into the sixth for Illinois in the midweek start as the junior surrendered five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two to take the win. Jack Wenninger and Joseph Glassey also saw time on the mound for the Fighting Illini, before Tommy Green (S, 3) worked the ninth in taking the save.
How They Scored
- Illinois took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jacob Campbell connected on a sacrifice fly to center allowing Danny Doligale to score and giving the Fighting Illini the early lead.
- The Sycamores evened the score in the top of the second as Luis Hernandez worked a 2-2 count before connecting on the RBI single through the left side scoring Keegan Watson to make it a 1-1 game.
- The Illinois left fielder misplayed Josue Urdaneta's fly ball in the top of the third allowing Randall Diaz to score as the Sycamores took the 2-1 lead.
- Ryan Hampe tied the game up for the Illini in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single scoring Jacob Campbell to even the score back up at 2-2.
- Justin Janas reached on a fielder's choice bringing home Cal Hejza in the bottom of the fifth sparking a four-run rally with two outs to give Illinois the 6-2 lead. Cam McDonald connected on a two-run single in the inning, while Kellen Sarver added an RBI double to bring home the final run in the frame.
- Josue Urdaneta came across the plate on a wild pitch as the Sycamores narrowed the lead down to 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning.
News & Notes
- Grant Magill threw out his ninth and 10th attempted base stealers in the 2022 season in the game and added a pick-off in the second inning as the redshirt sophomore continues to keep the opposition uneasy on the base paths.
- Jake Ridgway worked his first start on the mound since April 10 and eighth overall in the 2022 season in taking the no-decision on Tuesday night.
- Joey Hurth worked his team-leading 20th appearance for the Sycamores in the contest after entering the game in the fifth.
- Randall Diaz kept the Indiana State doubles streak alive with a two-out double in the top of the third inning to make it 24 consecutive contests with a two-bagger.
- Raine Richter made his fifth appearance of the season after coming into the contest with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
- Indiana State and Illinois split the season series as the Sycamores fall to 37-45-2 all-time against the Illini.
