Sycamores top Redbirds in Sunday series finale

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Keegan Watson and Grant Magill combined to drive in five runs in support of strong pitching performances by both Luke Patzner and Jack Parisi as Indiana State took the series finale against Illinois State on Sunday afternoon, 5-2.

The Sycamores (11-10, 2-1 MVC) took the series over the Redbirds with the Sunday win at Bob Warn Field as Indiana State picked up their fourth consecutive series win dating back to mid-March against Southeast Missouri State. Illinois State (10-11, 1-2 MVC) utilized a pair of solo home runs off the bats of Nick Gile and Jonathan Sabotnik, but the Redbirds were flummoxed by the Sycamores pitching staff throughout the day in taking the loss.

Watson gave the Sycamores their first lead of the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning and added a key RBI in the bottom of the fifth in the first collegiate multi-RBI game of his career. Magill added the go-ahead two-run single in the fifth and added another strong performance behind the plate as Indiana State bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday with a clinical win on Sunday.

Patzner (2-0) picked up his second win of the year after going the first five innings. The redshirt sophomore right-hander surrendered both home runs, but limited the Redbirds to just two singles beyond that while striking out three in the win. Jack Parisi (S, 1) picked up his first save and struck out six over the final four innings in a scoreless relief outing.

Watson and Magill were two of four Indiana State players to post multi-hit games on the day. Sean Ross added his 11th double of the season, while Josue Urdaneta also doubled among his two hits and two runs scored to highlight the Sycamore offense.

Jake McCaw connected on a pair of singles in the afternoon contest, while Gile and Sabotnik both homered in the loss.

Sean Sinisko (1-2) took the loss allowing 4.2 innings while allowing five runs and eight hits. Cameron Mabee and Jared Hart went the final 3.1 innings in scoreless relief.

How They Scored
  • Illinois State took the early lead in the top of the second as Jonathan Sabotnik connected on a two-out solo home run to right field to give the Redbirds the 1-0 lead.
  • The Sycamores battled back with two runs in the fourth as ISU loaded the bases on Diego Gines and Grant Magill singles and a Josue Urdaneta fielder's choice before Keegan Watson connected on a single through the left side giving Indiana State the 2-1 lead.
  • Illinois State's Nick Gile tied the game up in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo home run to left center field to put the score at 2-2.
  • The Sycamores plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth with Grant Magill connecting on a bases-loaded single to left field scoring Sean Ross and Jordan Schaffer, before Watson blooped a single to center field scoring Josue Urdaneta to provide the final 5-2 margin.
