WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State scored eight unanswered runs after the sixth inning, including four in the go-ahead 10th frame as the Sycamores topped host Purdue on Wednesday evening at Alexander Field, 10-6.
Seth Gergely connected on the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 10th inning as the Sycamores sent nine batters to the plate in the win.
Jordan Schaffer and
Sean Ross added RBI singles in the frame as Indiana State (16-8) went ahead of the Boilermakers (19-6) for the first time after trailing for a majority of the contest.
Joey Hurth (4-1) went two shutout innings in picking up his fourth win of the 2022 season. The redshirt sophomore pitched around a single in the ninth and hurled a perfect 10th in taking the midweek win.
The Sycamores trailed 5-0 through the first two innings before fighting their way back into the contest.
Sean Ross sparked the rally with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Purdue lead down to one run, while
Grant Magill evened the score at 6-6 with a sacrifice fly in the top of eighth to set the stage for the Sycamores' 10th inning.
Gergely and
Tyler Nelson both tripled for the Sycamores offense, while Gergely and Magill both added doubles as Indiana State connected on 15 hits in the game against the Purdue pitching staff.
Brennyn Cutts went the first 1.1 innings in his first start of the 2022 season, while
Jared Spencer,
Jose Cabrera and
Lane Miller also went at least one inning in what turned out to be a bullpen day for the ISU pitching staff.
Connor Fenlong went 3.0 innings in shutout relief to keep the Sycamores in the game. The redshirt junior surrendered just one hit while striking out three in an extended outing before turning the ball over to Hurth in bottom of the ninth.
Cam Thompson powered the Purdue offense with a two-run home run in the top of the first, while Pablo Lanzarote added a two-run double to highlight the Boilermaker offense. Paul Toetz added a two-hit day in the loss.
Khal Stephen (2-3) took the loss after going 0.1 innings and allowing three hits and four runs (three earned) in the top of the 10th. Logan Danzeisen went the first 2.2 innings in the start, while Ricky Castro added 3.1 innings of solid relief.
How They Scored
- Purdue took the early lead on Cam Thompson's two-run home run in the bottom of the first as the Boilermakers jumped ahead 2-0 in the contest.
- The Boilermakers added three more runs in the bottom of the second as Pablo Lanzarote brought home a pair of runs with a two-run double down the left field line, before coming around to score on an Indiana State wild pitch to give Purdue the 5-0 lead.
- Indiana State put their first run across the late in the top of the third inning as Josue Urdaneta drove in Seth Gergely with a RBI groundout to make it a 5-1 game.
- Grant Magill's RBI double in the top of the fourth inning scored Aaron Beck and cut the Purdue lead down to 5-2.
- Curtis Washington added Purdue's sixth run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Thompson to give the Boilermakers the 6-2 lead.
- Sean Ross drilled a three-run home run with one out in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Purdue lead down to 6-5 as Seth Gergely and Josue Urdaneta both came across the score on the drive.
- Grant Magill tied the game up in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly scoring Tyler Nelson to even the game up at 6-6.
- The Sycamores offense exploded for four runs in the top of the 10th inning as Seth Gergely, Jordan Schaffer, and Sean Ross all drove in runs to give Indiana State the 10-6 lead.
