Late rally leads Missouri State past Indiana State in Friday opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State was unable to hold off a late Missouri State rally as the Sycamores fell in the first game of the weekend series at Bob Warn Field, 7-6.

Missouri State (20-18, 4-6 MVC) put the first three runners on base in the top of the ninth and all three scored as the Bears overcame a 6-4 Indiana State (21-12, 6-4 MVC) lead to take the series opener. Walker Jenkins brought home the game-winning run with a bases-loaded walk scoring Mason Greer to give the Bears their first lead since the second inning.

The Sycamores mounted a rally of their own in the bottom of the ninth as Tyler Nelson was hit by a pitch and Keegan Watson connected on a two-out single up the middle to put the go-ahead run on base. However, the rally stalled as MSU's Jake McMahill (S, 1) fielded the final out and touched first ahead of the ISU runner to close out the game.

Watson paced the Sycamores offense with a team-high three hits, while Diego Gines and Seth Gergely both doubled as Indiana State scattered 13 hits throughout the contest. Gines, Grant Magill, and Jordan Schaffer added multi-hit efforts in the loss.

Matt Jachec went 7.0 innings for the eighth time this season as the redshirt sophomore allowed 11 hits and four runs while striking out five in the no-decision. Joey Hurth (5-3) took the loss after allowing three hits and three runs in an inning of work, while Jack Parisi closed out the contest on the mound.

Drake Baldwin homered, while the first three batters in the Missouri State lineup combined for nine hits and six runs scored to highlight the Bears offense. Greer added a pair of doubles and two RBI, while Spencer Nivens added a double and two runs scored in the win.

Trey Ziegenbein (5-4) picked up the win out of the bullpen after pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth inning for MSU. Adam Link went the first four innings in the no-decision allowing 10 hits and six runs (five earned), while Riyan Rodriguez and McMahill also saw time on the mound.
