TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State was unable to hold off a Missouri State rally in the top of the seventh as the Sycamores fell in Saturday afternoon's contest to the Bears at Bob Warn Field, 11-4.
The Sycamores (21-13, 6-5 MVC) took the early lead thanks to
Jordan Schaffer,
Sean Ross, and
Randall Diaz home runs in the bottom of the third inning in support of a strong start from
Connor Fenlong, However, Missouri State (21-18, 5-6 MVC) rallied back with Drake Baldwin's grand slam sparking 11 unanswered runs by the Bears as MSU clinched the series win.
Fenlong went 5.0 innings in his first collegiate start of the 2022 season. The redshirt junior right-hander allowed six hits and four runs while striking out six in the no-decision.
Jared Spencer (1-2) took the loss after allowing two hits and two runs over his 1.0+ innings of work.
Jack Parisi,
Brennyn Cutts,
Jose Cabrera, and
Cameron Holycross all combined to go the final three innings to close out the contest.
The trio of Sycamore home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted an Indiana State offensive attack that featured 11 hits.
Keegan Watson and
Sean Ross both went 3-for-4 from the plate, while
Jordan Schaffer added a double in addition to his home run for his 13th multi-hit game of the season. Ross, Watson, and
Seth Gergely also doubled in the contest in the Sycamores' loss.
Eric Loomis (2-0) went the final 3.2 innings in one-hit relief to earn the Bears' victory on Saturday. His relief effort came after Forrest Barnes went the first 5.1 frames allowing 10 hits and four runs while striking out four.
Drake Baldwin and Walker Jenkins both homered for the Bears, while Grant Wood, Mason Hull, and Hayden Moore all posted multi-hit games in the win.
How They Scored
- Jordan Schaffer, Sean Ross, and Randall Diaz all homered in the bottom of the third inning, while Grant Magill connected on a sacrifice fly scoring Keegan Watson to stake the Sycamores to the 4-0 lead.
- Missouri State evened the score with one swing in the fifth as Drake Baldwin connected on the game-tying grand slam scoring Spencer Nivens, Hayden Moore, and Jaden Rolffs to make it a 4-4 ball game.
- The Bears plated six in the top of the seventh with Mason Hull's three-run double the big hit in the frame as Missouri State sent 11 batters to the plate in taking the 10-4 lead.
- Walker Jenkins connected on a solo home run in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring and provide the final 11-4 margin.

- Saturday afternoon's game featured Indiana State's 22nd double-digit hit game of the 2022 season as the Sycamores team batting average rose to a Missouri Valley-leading .313 on the year.
- Keegan Watson recorded his second three-hit game of the weekend series and third of the season on Saturday afternoon to raise his batting average to .395 on the year.
- Sean Ross added his third three-hit game of 2022 and 15th multi-hit game of the year to raise his batting average up to .398.
- Jordan Schaffer's pair of hits marked his 13th multi-hit game of the season and 38th of his ISU career.

- The Sycamores continued their doubles streak on Saturday with four different players hitting doubles in the loss. The streak moves to 13 consecutive games with multiple doubles and 22 consecutive contests with at least one double.
- Saturday also marked the fifth time in the month of April and sixth time in 2022 Indiana State has hit at least four doubles in a single game.
- Saturday marked Connor Fenlong's first collegiate start in his 35th career appearance at Indiana State.
- ISU's pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts marking the 11th time the Sycamores have posted double-digit strikeouts in 2022.
