Sycamores tie home run record in Sunday loss to Evansville

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State's rally fell short on Sunday afternoon in the series finale as the Sycamores dropped the final contest of the weekend to visiting Evansville, 12-9.

On a windy day at Bob Warn Field with gusts between 20-30 MPH, Indiana State (21-11, 6-3 MVC) and Evansville (21-17, 6-3 MVC) combined to hit nine home runs in the contest in a power-filled display that saw the teams combine to use nine pitcher on the mound. The Sycamores combined for six of the nine shots with Aaron Beck drilling out a pair of home runs, but it was Evansville's Simon Scherry who had the deciding blast with a three-run shot in the top of the eighth inning that proved the difference in the contest.

Indiana State's six home runs tied the school record for most home runs in a contest for the third time in program history and first since 1983 when the Sycamores combined for six home runs against IUPUI back on April 26, 1983. Tyler Nelson connected on the first home run of his ISU career with a three-run shot in the sixth, while Jordan Schaffer (2), Sean Ross (5), and Keegan Watson (3) also added home runs in the loss.

Randall Diaz (3-for-5) and Beck both posted three hit contests for the Sycamores, while Grant Magill added two hits, including a double, for ISU in the loss.

Jared Spencer (1-1) took the loss in the relief effort against the Purple Aces going 2.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned), while striking out two. Jack Parisi added 3.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts, while Connor Fenlong and Joey Hurth also time out of the bullpen for ISU.

Tanner Craig, Evan Berkey, and Scherry homered for the Aces as Evansville took two of three from the Sycamores to take the series. Danny Borgstrom added a three-hit day with a pair of doubles to highlight the UE offense.

Shane Harris (3-2) went the final 3.1 innings in relief to secure the win for the Aces. He allowed four hits and one run and was aided by the Evansville defense with double plays turned in both the seventh and eighth innings in the win.

How They Scored
  • Evansville plated five early runs in the top of the first inning highlighted by a Tanner Craig two-run home run as the Aces jumped ahead at the start of the contest.
  • Jordan Schaffer put the Sycamores on the board with a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the ISU at-bats in the bottom of the first to narrow the score to 5-1.
  • Keegan Watson added a two-run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the second inning scoring Randall Diaz to cut the lead down to 5-3.
  • Sean Ross powered a solo home run in the bottom of the third with his fifth home run of the season clearing the fence in left center to make it a 5-4 game.
  • Evan Berkey put the Aces ahead 7-4 in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run scoring Mark Shallenberger.
  • Indiana State's sixth inning featured an Aaron Beck solo home run and Tyler Nelson's three-run blast scoring Seth Gergely and Grant Magill as the Sycamores took the 8-7 lead.
  • Danny Borgstrom's RBI double in the top of the seventh tied the game up for Evansville and he came around to score on an ISU error in the frame to give the Aces the 9-8 lead.
  • Scherry's three-run shot to left field in the top of the eighth scored Berkey and Brent Widder and put Evansville ahead 12-8.
  • Aaron Beck connected on his second home run of the game with a two-out solo home run to centerfield to provide the final margin.
News & Notes

  • Aaron Beck became the second Sycamore with a multi-home run game this season joining Josue Urdaneta (2 vs. SEMO, March 15).
  • The Sycamores continued their doubles streak marking 20th consecutive games with at least one player connecting on a double and 11th consecutive game with multiple doubles after Aaron Beck, Randall Diaz, and Grant Magill all reached second base on a hit.
  • Tyler Nelson became the 13th different Indiana State player to homer this season with his three-run shot in the sixth.
  • Jack Parisi's five strikeouts gives the graduate student 324 in his collegiate career and keeps him ahead of Georgetown's Nolan McCarthy (308) for the active NCAA Division I career lead.
