Evansville powers past Sycamores on Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamores were unable to get the bats going on Saturday afternoon as Indiana State fell to visiting Evansville in the second game of the weekend series at Bob Warn Field, 14-0.

Jordan Schaffer and Joe Kido both doubled for Indiana State (21-10, 6-2 MVC) in the contest, but the Sycamores were unable to string together a rally against Evansville (20-17, 5-3) starter Nick Smith (5-2) in the seven-inning loss.

Luke Patzner (2-1) took the loss for the Sycamores after going the first 5.0 innings. The redshirt sophomore allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out five in the start. Cam Edmonson, Raine Richter, and Lane Miller went the rest of the way to close out the contest.

Smith went the distance on the mound for the Purple Aces as the sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out seven in the complete game effort. He was aided by four Evansville home runs, two by Brent Widder, in the win.

Widder's five RBI paced Evansville in the win, while Simon Scherry and Brendan Hord homered as a part a 10-hit Aces offensive effort on the day. Hord finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored to highlight the win.

How They Scored
  • Evansville took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Brent Widder's two-run shot down the left field line scoring Mark Shallenberger.
  • Simon Scherry added to the lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to put Evansville up 3-0.
  • A four-run fifth inning gave the Aces the 7-0 lead with Evan Berkey's two-run double and Scherry's two-run single highlighting the frame.
  • Five runs came across the plate for Evansville in the top of the sixth with Widder's three-run shot the big hit in the frame to give UE the 12-0 lead.
  • Brendan Hord capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh scoring Chase Hug to put the final line at 14-0.
