TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Illinois State took advantage of four home runs and a strong relief outing from Erik Kubiatowicz to top host Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field, 12-2.
The Sycamore (14-8, 1-1 MVC) offense welcomed an
Aaron Beck solo home run and added doubles by
Randall Diaz,
Sean Ross, and
Seth Gergely on the afternoon, but Indiana State was unable to hold off an Illinois State (10-10, 1-1 MVC) offense that scored early and often in the second game of the weekend series.
Jake Ridgway (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Indiana State after allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) over one inning, while
Jared Spencer,
Lane Miller, and
Cameron Holycross also saw time on the mound for the Sycamores.
Ryan Cermak homered twice in a 4-for-5 outing at the plate and added three RBI to even the series up at 1-1. Jake McCaw and Jonathan Sabotnik also homered for the Redbirds in the win.
Kubiatowicz (1-1) took his first win of the season after a four-inning relief effort. The right-hander allowed two hits and two walks while striking out two in support of starter Jordan Lussier. Zach Holcomb pitched a perfect seventh inning to close out the contest for Illinois State.
How They Scored
- Ryan Cernak and Jake McCaw both connected on solo home runs in the top of the first inning to give Illinois State the early 2-0 lead.
- The Redbirds took advantage of a Sycamore error and a Nick Gile two-run double in the top of the second inning to stretch their lead to 7-0.
- Indiana State took two back in the bottom of the second as Aaron Beck connected on a leadoff home run to left field and Seth Gergely's sacrifice fly brought home Sean Ross to cut the margin down to 7-2.
- Cernak added a solo home run in the fourth and Jonathan Sabotnik added a two-run shot in the inning to make it an 11-2 Illinois State lead.
- McCaw drove in the final run of the contest with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth scoring Adrian Flores to provide the final margin.

- Seth Gergely ran his hitting streak to 11 games on Saturday as the redshirt junior went 1-for-2 from the plate with a double and a sacrifice fly.
- Sean Ross added his team-leading 10th double of the season.
- Aaron Beck connected on his first home run of the 2022 season as the redshirt senior became the 11th Indiana State player to hit a home run this year.
- Four of the Sycamores five hits in the contest went for extra bases in the loss.
- Lane Miller recorded his longest outing of the season with the redshirt senior going 2.1 innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out two.
- Cameron Holycross also posted a season-best on the year with the redshirt sophomore allowing just one hit over his inning of work.
