Pitching, clutch hitting lead Sycamores past Redbirds in series opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State's pitching held off a pesky Illinois State offense and the Sycamores did enough at the plate to top the visiting Redbirds, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Bob Warn Field in the Missouri Valley opener for both teams.

Indiana State (14-7, 1-0 MVC) took advantage of four hits-batsmen, three walks, and a timely passed ball to plate four runs against Illinois State (9-10, 0-1 MVC) on Friday afternoon. Sean Ross went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Seth Gergely added another multi-hit game to lead the Sycamores past the Redbirds.

Matt Jachec (6-1) picked up his fourth quality start in a row and fifth of the season as the redshirt sophomore scattered a season-high 11 hits over 7.2 innings. Jachec posted seven strikeouts in the win and pitched around runners throughout the contest before turning the ball over to Joey Hurth (S, 4) in the top of the eighth.

Grant Magill fired a strike down to second to catch Josh Blount stealing and ending the Redbirds eighth inning. Hurth closed out the contest by striking out the side in the top of the ninth in posting his team-leading fourth save of the season.

Randall Diaz, Tyler Nelson, and Seth Gergely all posted RBI in the contest for the Sycamores as ISU was limited to a season-low five hits in the win.

Jake McCaw, Nick Gile, and Kyle Soberano all recorded multi-hit games for Illinois State in the opener, while Connor Olson put together the Redbirds' lone extra-base hit of the game with a leadoff double in the second inning.

Derek Salata (2-3) took the loss after allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings of work. Justin Schubert tossed two innings of hitless relief, but allowed an unearned run in the eighth before Cameron Mabee recorded the final out.

How They Scored
  • Jordan Schaffer was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the third inning and came around to score on Randall Diaz's RBI single to give the Sycamores the early 1-0 lead.
  • Two more hit by pitches in the bottom of the fourth inning put Indiana State runners on base and Tyler Nelson took advantage with a RBI sacrifice fly to right field scoring Diego Gines and putting the Sycamores up 2-0.
  • The Redbirds pushed their first run across in the top of the sixth inning as Aidan Huggins scored on a wild pitch to narrow the gap down to 2-1.
  • The Sycamores responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Sean Ross hustled and scored on an errant Illinois State throw to give the Sycamores a 3-1 lead through six.
  • Illinois State utilized three consecutive singles in the top of the seventh inning with Ryan Cermak driving home Adrian Flores with a base hit to center field to cut the lead down to 3-2.
  • The Sycamores pushed across the final run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth as Seth Gergely's bases-loaded infield single brought home Sean Ross to put the margin at 4-2.
