Sycamores hold off Michigan rally in LeClair Classic finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Indiana State held off a late Michigan rally, while Randall Diaz drove in three RBI as the Sycamores took their final game at the LeClair Classic on Sunday afternoon over the Wolverines, 6-5.
 
Indiana State (6-4) went ahead early in the top of the second inning with Diaz's two-run double down the left field line scoring Seth Gergely and Parker Stinson to give the Sycamores the 4-0 lead. Michigan (7-5) steadily chipped away at the Sycamores lead before a three-run rally in the eighth inning cut the ISU lead down to 6-5 following Matt Frey's RBI single.
 
Connor Fenlong (S, 3) ended the Michigan rally in the eighth getting Jimmy Obertop to strike out to keep the one-run lead intact. The Sycamore relief ace pitched around a one-out single in the ninth before getting Jake Marti to go down swinging for the final out in securing the Indiana State win.
 
Diaz paced the Sycamores with two of Indiana State's 13 hits in the contest, while the freshman drove in three runs in the contest. Luis Hernandez tripled and Sean Ross doubled to highlight Indiana State's efforts at the plate, while Josue Urdaneta, Stinson, and Gergely all finished with multi-hit games.
 
Luke Patzner (1-0) took his first win of the season on the mound as the right-hander took the mound in the fifth inning in relief of Jake Ridgway. Ridgway went the first four innings allowing five hits and one run while striking out four in the no decision. Jared Spencer and Joey Hurth also saw time on the mound before Fenlong took over in closing out his third save of the season.
 
Frey was the Wolverines' top threat at the plate with three of Michigan's 12 hits in the contest. He added the lone home run in the game, while Ted Burton added a double in the UM loss.
 
Jacob Denner (1-1) took the loss on the mound after going the first 6.2 innings allowing 11 hits and six runs while striking out seven. Noah Rennard and Willie Weiss closed out the game combining to allow two hits over the final 2.1 innings in relief.
 
How They Scored
  • Indiana State took the early lead as Sean Ross doubled home Luis Hernandez in the top of the second inning sparking a four-run frame. Seth Gergely (RBI single) and Randall Diaz (two-run double) also brought home ISU runs as the Sycamores jumped out to the early 4-0 lead.
  • Frey cut into the ISU lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to put the score at 4-1.
  • Diego Gines put the margin at 5-1 in the top of the fifth with his sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Diaz.
  • Marti cut the lead back down to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth scoring Tito Flores.
  • Diaz brought home the final Indiana State run in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Gergely and putting the score at 6-2.
  • The Wolverines rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth with Joe Stewart, Burton, and Frey all recording RBI hits in the inning to put the final score at 6-5.
News & Notes
  • Josue Urdaneta continued his team-leading 10-game hitting streak on Sunday afternoon, while his two-hit game marked his seventh multi-hit contest of the 2022 season. Urdaneta recorded multi-hit games in all three contests over the weekend at the LeClair Classic.
  • Jordan Schaffer extended his on-base streak to 22 games following his single in the seventh inning.
  • Diego Gines extended his on-base streak to 14 consecutive games following his single in the ninth inning.
  • The Sycamores were held without a home run in the contest snapping a streak of seven consecutive games.
  • Luis Hernandez became the second Sycamore to triple on the season with his leadoff three-bagger in the second inning.
  • Indiana State took the 3-2 series lead over Michigan following ISU's win on Sunday. 
Up Next
The Sycamores remain on the road next weekend as Indiana State makes the trek to Dayton, Ohio and Wright State University for a three-game weekend series at Nischwitz Stadium. The three-game series is set to begin on Friday, March 11, with first pitch in the opener scheduled for 3 p.m.
