Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – Wright State's fifth inning rally led the host Raiders past visiting Indiana State in the series opener on Thursday afternoon as the Sycamores fell 6-3 at Nischwitz Stadium.
Wright State (3-8) jumped ahead of the Sycamores (6-5) early on a Julian Greenwell leadoff home run, but Indiana State rallied back with runs in both the second and third frames to keep the contest close.
The Raiders took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a Sammy Sass RBI single, while Luke Arnold added a two-run single to put Wright State ahead 5-2 midway through the contest. The Sycamores rallied late with
Jordan Schaffer bringing home
Isaiah Thompson with a run-scoring fielder's choice in the eighth, but Indiana State was unable to fully close the gap in the loss.
Schaffer led the Sycamores with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate as Indiana State out-hit the Raiders 11-9 on Thursday afternoon.
Randall Diaz and Thompson both added multi-hit games on the day, while
Sean Ross connected on his third double of the season in the loss.
Will Goebel (0-1) took the loss on the mound after surrendering two runs in 0.2 innings in the fifth.
Jake Ridgway was effected in his second start allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three in the no-decision over the first four innings.
Cameron Holycross,
Raine Richter, and
Brennyn Cutts also saw time on the mound in the loss.
Greenwell, Sass, and Alec Sayre all posted multi-hit games to lead the Wright State offense. Sayre and Justin McConnell connected on doubles in the game, while Greenwell's home run and triple powered the Raiders offense.
Aaron Ernst (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for the Raiders after allowing two runs over the opening five innings. Jay Luikart (S, 1) went the final two-thirds of an inning in securing his first save.
How They Scored
- Wright State took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a Julian Greenwell leadoff home run and a Sammy Sass RBI double to stake the Raiders to the early lead.
- The Sycamores loaded the bases in the top of the second to cut into the WSU lead as Randall Diaz scored on an error to cut the gap down to 2-1.
- Grant Magill tied the game up in the top of the third with a bases-loaded groundout scoring Diego Gines to put the score at 2-2.
- Sass put the Raiders back in the lead with a RBI single, while Luke Arnold singled home two to highlight the three-run frame as Wright State went up 5-2 after the fifth inning.
- Jordan Schaffer's fielder's choice in the top of the eighth brought home Isaiah Thompson to cut the Raiders' lead down to 5-3.
- Alec Sayre followed a Greenwell triple with a RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth to put the final margin at 6-3.
