Jachec dominates as Sycamores take series opener against Kansas

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Matt Jachec pitched into the ninth inning while three Sycamores homered as Indiana State topped visiting Kansas on the first game of the weekend series at Bob Warn Field on Saturday afternoon, 6-2.

Jachec (4-1) went one batter into the ninth inning in his longest outing of the 2022 season as the Hampshire, Ill. native surrendered just five hits and one run while striking out nine in his team-leading fourth win of the season. The right-hander appeared to get stronger as the game continued picking up eight of his nine strikeouts over his final four innings, including picking up a trio of strikeouts in the top of the eighth when Kansas was threatening to rally back.

Josue Urdaneta, Diego Gines, and Grant Magill all homered in support of Jachec's outing on the mound as the Sycamores (10-6) improved to 3-0 at Bob Warn Field early in the 2022 season. Urdaneta's solo shot in the sixth made it a two-run game, while Gines and Magill both homered in the three-run eighth inning to help Indiana State put the game away.

Saturday's win marked head coach Mitch Hannahs' 250th career win inside the Indiana State dugout. The ISU Hall of Famer is in his ninth season at the helm of the program and is the second ISU baseball coach to achieve the mark joining Bob Warn (1,070-745-5, 1976-2006).

Urdaneta and Magill both posted multi-hit games to highlight the ISU offense on the day, while Aaron Beck added a pinch-hit double and Seth Gergely had a second inning triple to keep the Sycamores offense moving on a wet and windy day.

Joey Hurth (S, 2) picked up his second save of the 2022 season as the Sycamore right-hander needed just one pitch before Grant Magill threw out KU's Tom Lichty attempting to steal second to end the game.

Kansas (7-9) was paced by multi-hit games from both Tavian Josenberger and Lichty in taking the loss. Nolan Metcalf connected on the Jayhawks' lone extra-base hit of the game, a leadoff double, in the top of the ninth inning.

Cole Larson (0-3) took the loss after going 7.1 innings allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned), while striking out seven. The Kansas right-hander nearly matched Jachec pitch-for-pitch in the game before turning the ball over to the bullpen late.
