Sycamores split doubleheader to take the series with Kansas

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State split Sunday's doubleheader to take the series from visiting Kansas as ISU fell in the opener, 7-5, before rebounding to take the 11-10 win in the Sunday finale at Bob Warn Field.
 
The Jayhawks (8-10) took the first game on Sunday thanks to a late Reyce Curnane two-run home run to set up the rubber match in the finale. Josue Urdaneta swung the game to the Sycamores (11-7) in the bottom of the eighth with his fourth home run of the week and Joey Hurth (S, 3) held the Jayhawks scoreless in the ninth to secure the doubleheader split and the series win.
 
Urdaneta paced the Sycamores batters on the day going 4-for-8 with a double and a home run, while driving in three RBI, while Seth Gergely added three RBI and a double to highlight ISU's offense. Diego Gines and Jordan Schaffer also connected on extra-base hits as the Sycamores combined for 18 hits over the two games on Sunday.
 
Jack Parisi (2-2) picked up his second win of the 2022 season in a relief stint in Sunday's finale. Luke Patzner added 4.2 innings in strong relief in game one to highlight the Sycamores on the mound.
 
Game One: Kansas 7, Indiana State 5
Kansas took control of the opening contest early and Reyce Curnane came through in the clutch with the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to stymie the Sycamores in Sunday's first game.
 
The Jayhawks built an early 4-0 lead on the strength of a Connor McMurray home run and a pair of Nolan Metcalf singles as Kansas limited the Sycamores early. ISU battled back with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game up on Seth Gergely's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh scoring Diego Gines and Tyler Nelson.
 
However, momentum swung back to the Jayhawks in the top of the eighth on Curnane's two-out, two-run home run and Sergio Rivera added a RBI single in the ninth to put Kansas ahead 7-4.
 
ISU put its first four runners on base in the bottom of the ninth with Gergely bringing home Jackson Taylor on a fielder's choice, but KU's Jonah Ulane (S, 4) was able to limit the Sycamores the rest of the way in the Kansas win.
 
Josue Urdaneta (2-for-5) and Seth Gergely (2-for-5, 3 RBI) highlighted the Sycamores offense in the game. Gergely added his second double of the season in the loss.
 
Brennyn Cutts (1-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run on base in the top of the eighth inning. Jake Ridgway went the first two innings in the no-decision, while Luke Patzner went a season-long 4.2 innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out four out of the bullpen.
 
Tavian Josenberger was the lone Jayhawk to post a multi-hit game in the opener, while Metcalf and Curnane each had multiple RBI in the win.
 
Ryan Vanderhei went the first 5.2 innings in the no-decision allowing five hits and two runs while striking out seven. Stone Hewlett (1-0) was the pitcher of record when Kansas took the lead in the top of the eighth to pick up his first win, while Daniel Hegarty and Ulane went the final 1.2 innings in closing out the win.
 
How They Scored
  • Kansas took advantage of an errant pickoff throw and a Nolan Metcalf RBI single to take the early lead in the top of the first inning as Maui Ahuna crossed the plate to put the Jayhawks up 1-0.
  • The Jayhawks plated two more runs in the third as Casey Burnham brought home Dylan Ditzenberger on a fielder's choice, while Nolan Metcalf posted a RBI groundout scoring Tavian Josenberger to put the score at 3-0 Kansas.
  • Cooper McMurray made it a 4-0 Jayhawks lead in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out solo home run to left field.
  • The Sycamores halved the Kansas lead in the bottom of the sixth with Grant Magill drawing a bases-loaded walk scoring Parker Stinson, while Jordan Schaffer's sacrifice fly to left field scored Joe Kido to put the score at 4-2.
  • Seth Gergely's two-run infield single scored Diego Gines and Tyler Nelson in the bottom of the seventh to even the score at 4-4. Nelson slid around the play at the plate for the game-tying run to highlight the two-run inning.
  • Reyce Curnane put the Jayhawks back in the lead with a two-run home run just to the right of straightaway centerfield to give Kansas the 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth.
  • Kansas added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Sergio Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Josenberger to put the KU lead at 7-4.
  • Indiana State added a late run in the bottom of the ninth as Seth Gergely brought home Jackson Taylor with a fielder's choice to set the final score at 7-5.
Game Two: Indiana State 11, Kansas 10
Indiana State outlasted the visiting Jayhawks in the series finale on Sunday afternoon as the Sycamores utilized a late Josue Urdaneta home run to power their way past Kansas in the 11-10 win.
 
The Sycamores batted around to put five runs across the plate in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the game early as Seth Gergely again came through with a timely two-run single. The ISU lead reached 10-5 in the bottom of the sixth as Jordan Schaffer added a RBI double and Tyler Nelson connected on a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
 
Kansas never gave up as the Jayhawks rallied their way back into the game with a three-run seventh inning highlighted by a pair of Indiana State errors. Kansas nearly brought the game all the way back on Jack Hammond's second home run of the game in the top of the ninth, but Joey Hurth was able to shut down the Kansas offense stranding the tying runner at third in picking up the save.
 
Schaffer and Urdaneta both posted multi-hit games, while Randall Diaz scored three runs in the series finale against Kansas. Diego Gines added his fifth double of the year to highlight ISU's offense.
 
Jack Parisi (2-2) picked up the win after going 3.0 innings in relief of starter Jared Spencer. Parisi allowed four hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out four. Jose Cabrera, Connor Fenlong, and Hurth (S, 3) all went one inning apiece in closing out the contest.
 
How They Scored
  • Seth Gergely put the first two Sycamore runs across with a RBI single to spark a five-run Indiana State rally in the bottom of the second. Randall Diaz, Jordan Schaffer, and Josue Urdaneta also posted RBI in the inning as the Sycamores sent 10 batters to the plate in taking the 5-0 lead.
  • Jack Hammond connected on a bases-clearing grand slam in the top of the third inning to put Kansas back in the mix as the Jayhawks took advantage of a pair of infield singles in narrowing the ISU lead down to 5-4.
  • The Sycamores added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Josue Urdaneta connected on a RBI double, while a second ISU run crossed the plate on a KU balk to put the Indiana State lead at 7-4.
  • Kansas utilized an Indiana State error to plate a run in the top of the fifth as Maui Ahuna came around to score on a ball bobbled in right field, narrowing the ISU lead down to 7-5.
  • Jordan Schaffer connected on a RBI double scoring Randall Diaz, while Schaffer and Josue Urdaneta both scored on passed balls in the inning to stretch the ISU lead to 10-5 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Kansas took three back in the top of the seventh as the Jayhawks sent nine batters to the plate with Casey Burnham and Maui Ahuna driving in runs, while Burnham scored on an ISU error to cut the deficit down to 10-8.
  • Josue Urdaneta connected on his fourth home run of the week and second of the weekend as the redshirt sophomore drilled a ball to the left of the scoreboard in right centerfield in the bottom of the eighth to put ISU ahead 11-8.
  • Hammond connected on his second home run of the contest, this one a two-run shot to left centerfield, as Kansas cut the Sycamores lead down to 11-10 in the top of the ninth, before Joey Hurth shut the door for the save.
News & Notes
  • Josue Urdaneta's hitting streak reached 17 games in the bottom of the third inning of the first game as the redshirt sophomore drilled a one-out single to centerfield. He added a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth in game two of the doubleheader to stretch the streak to 18 games.
  • Urdaneta connected on his fourth home run of the week as the redshirt sophomore drilled a one-out solo shot to right center in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was also his team-leading fourth home run of the 2022 season.
  • Seth Gergely posted his second multi-hit game of the season in Sunday's opener with a 2-for-5 performance, while adding a season-high three RBI.
  • Josue Urdaneta connected on his team-leading 11th and 12th multi-hit games of the season as the redshirt sophomore posted multiple hits in all three games over the weekend series.
  • Jordan Schaffer recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the year in the second game on Sunday with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate.
  • Randall Diaz scored three runs in the second game to pace ISU.
  • Jack Parisi recorded his 300th career collegiate strikeout to end the Kansas fifth inning. He finished the day as the active NCAA Division I leader with 302 career strikeouts following his four-K game.
  • Joey Hurth picked up his third save of the season going the final inning in the series finale.
  • Indiana State improves to 5-3 in the all-time series against Kansas with the Sunday split.
