Henry’s Career Night Not Enough as Sycamores Fall in Double Overtime at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Cameron Henry set career highs in scoring and assists but it wasn't enough as Valpo grinded out a 79-72 double overtime victory over Indiana State Saturday night inside the Athletics Recreation Center on Valparaiso's campus. Neither team led by more than eight points in a game that saw 13 lead changes and remained tied for 16:38.

The Beacons (11-12, 4-7 MVC) led by one point in the second overtime with 1:31 when Sheldon Edwards hit a deep three to extend the VU lead to 74-70 and Valpo did not look back en route to the victory.

Henry scored a career high 28 points -- his fourth game of the season scoring 20 or more -- on 10-of-23 shooting, including two 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. A Chesterfield, Va. Native, Henry also set a new high mark with eight assists while grabbing six rebounds.

Cooper Neese was the only other Sycamore to score in double-figures after putting up 17 points, including a 5-for-11 mark from deep. The sharpshooter moved into sole possession of sixth place in school history in career 3-pointers in the game.

Xavier Bledson looked to score the go-ahead basket with 17 seconds left in regulation on an offensive rebound putback, but after an official review, the shot was waved off due to a shot clock violation. Valpo had a chance to win the game but Ben Krikke was called for a travel with two seconds remaining to force overtime.

Indiana State (9-13, 2-8 MVC) took a 34-33 lead into the locker room at the halftime break, rallying back from an early 11-3 with an 11-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Sycamores were led by Henry's 10 points while Neese added six in the first 20 minutes as ISU shot 40 percent from the field (12-30) and 37.5 percent (6-16) from distance.

The Sycamores won the rebounding battle 42-36, including a 12-8 advantage in offensive boards turning into just three second-chance points. The Beacons turned their eight offensive rebounds into 11 points as well as 17 ISU turnovers into 15 points which proved to be the difference.

Kobe King led Valpo with 24 points on 14 shots as the guard used his quickness to get to the charity stripe 12 times, connecting on seven free throws. King also picked up 11 rebounds to secure a double-double. Kevion Taylor added 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
