TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State continues its three-game road swing Friday night when it takes on Bradley inside Renaissance Coliseum. Tipoff between the Sycamores and Braves is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on ESPN+ and 105.5 The Legend.
Last Time Out
Northern Iowa jumped out to an early lead Wednesday evening and never looked back, defeating visiting Indiana State by a 72-49 scoreline inside the McLeod Center.
Natalia Lalic and
Mya Glanton led the Sycamores with eight points apiece, while
Del'Janae Williams and
Marie Hunter had seven each. Glanton had a team-high seven rebounds, while Williams also added three assists and two steals in the loss.
Glanton opened the scoring on ISU's first offensive possession but a subsequent UNI 3-pointer gave the Panthers a lead they would never relinquish. The Sycamores kept things close for most of the first quarter before a late 9-2 UNI put ISU in a hole it couldn't recover from. Northern Iowa led by as many as 32 midway through the fourth quarter, and though Indiana State closed the game on an 8-0 run, the result was already decided by that point.
A Closer Look at Bradley
Bradley enters the weekend at 3-15 overall and 0-9 in MVC play. The Braves started off the season with three consecutive wins but have dropped each of their last 15 games, including a 73-57 loss to Indiana State when the teams met in January.
Tatum Koenig led the Braves with 11 points and five rebounds in their last game, a 60-36 loss to Northern Iowa. Chloe Rice added eight points and five boards, while Sierra Morrow scored seven off the bench.
Caroline Waite leads Bradley's active players in scoring at 11.3 points per game, while Koenig adds 10.3 points and a team-high 3.1 assists per contest. Morrow leads the team in rebounding at 4.8 boards per game.
Bradley will be without the services of the top scorer in program history, Gabi Haack, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the conference opener against Illinois State. Haack was averaging a team-high 17.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Series History Against Bradley
Indiana State has a 50-31 lead in the all-time series, with Bradley holding a slim 21-19 advantage in games played in Peoria. The Braves had won six straight meetings prior to ISU's 73-57 win in the earlier matchup this season.
The Sycamores went on a 16-0 run midway through the first quarter and never looked back when the two teams met in Terre Haute this season.
Marie Hunter played all 40 minutes and finished with a career-high 22 points along with 10 rebounds for her second career double-double.
Natalia Lalic added 13 for Indiana State, with nearly all of that production coming in the first half.
Picking Up The Pace
Indiana State has hit its stride on the offensive end since conference play began. The Sycamores lead the Valley in scoring during conference play after ranking near the bottom of the league during non-conference play. Included in that scoring output is an 85-point game against Valpo, which is the highest point total for the Sycamores against a Division I opponent this season and the most in a conference game for ISU since February 2021.
Indiana State has three players averaging double-figure scoring during conference play (
Del'Janae Williams,
Marie Hunter and
Natalia Lalic), with five others also averaging at least five points per game against Valley foes.
Crashing The Glass
Indiana State has developed a penchant for cleaning up its missed shots on the offensive end during conference play. The Sycamores have grabbed offensive rebounds on 33 percent of its missed shots, a mark that ranks third in the Valley.
The Sycamores have also done a strong job of limiting opposition rebounds in Valley play. Opposing MVC teams are averaging just 31.7 rebounds per game against the Sycamores, the second-fewest in the conference. ISU has a rebound margin of plus-2.1 during conference play.
Balanced Attack
Indiana State's offense doesn't necessarily have a marquee scorer, but that plays to the benefit of the Sycamores. Eight different players have led the Sycamores in scoring in a game this season, with
Del'Janae Williams having a team-high five games as the Sycamores' leading scorer.
Thievery
Indiana State's defense continues to remain among the nation's best as the Sycamores enter Friday's contest sitting in the top 25 in a pair of team defensive categories. The Sycamores are 15th in steals per game (11.4) and 22nd in turnovers forced (20.89). ISU also leads the Valley in total steals (206), while ranking third in the conference in turnover margin (plus-2.67).
The Sycamores have frequently disrupted opposing offenses this season, recording at least eight steals in 16 of the first 18 games season. ISU has 13 games with 10 or more steals this season.
ISU has often translated its success on the defensive end to the offensive side as well. The Sycamores are averaging 22.4 points per game off turnovers and have 20 or more points off turnovers in eight of the last 11 games.
Banner Year
The 2021-22 season has already seen multiple Indiana State players set career highs in the scoring column. Overall, five different returning Sycamores have set new career bests in scoring this season, with a trio of newcomers also posting double-digit efforts this season.
Del'Janae Williams had a career-high 26 in Indiana State's road win over Georgia Southern in one of her four 20-point games this season, as she scored 24 against Chicago State, 21 against Evansville and 24 against Valpo.
Adrian Folks had a career-best 24 in a double-double at Saint Louis, while
Mya Glanton set career-high marks of 22 points and 16 rebounds against Western Michigan.
Marie Hunter (19 vs. Jacksonville State, 22 vs. Bradley) and
Natalia Lalic (13 at Georgia Southern and vs. Bradley, 20 at Drake, 15 vs. Missouri State) have also set their career highs in scoring this season. In addition, newcomers
Tonysha Curry (15 vs. UIC, 13 vs. Valpo),
Anna McKendree (13 vs. Stephens (Mo.), 14 at Purdue Fort Wayne, 10 at Drake, 18 vs. Illinois State) and
Arianna Smith (11 at Western Kentucky and vs. Bradley, 15 vs. Valpo) have hit double-figures in scoring during their first seasons in the Blue and White.
