FT. MYERS, Fla. – Indiana State strung together 22 hits and
Miguel Rivera homered to lead the Sycamores past Minnesota on Saturday afternoon at Hammond Stadium, 16-3.
Five Indiana State (4-2) players recorded multi-hit games paced by four-hit outings by
Jordan Schaffer and
Sean Ross as the Sycamores jumped ahead early in their first matchup of the weekend against the Gophers. Rivera and Ross led five players with multi-RBI contests with three apiece, while
Joe Kido scored three runs as the Sycamores improved to 2-0 over their second weekend in Florida.
Grant Magill added a 3-for-5 performance from the plate, while Kido and
Parker Stinson both had two hits apiece as the Sycamores faced seven different Minnesota (2-5) pitchers in the ISU win. Kido, Stinson, and
Randall Diaz all connected on doubles in the game and Ross added his first triple of the year to highlight the Sycamores at the plate.
Matt Jachec (2-0) picked up his second win of the season as the redshirt sophomore put together a quality start line. Jachec scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run while striking out six over his seven-inning outing. The Hampshire, Ill. native lowered his ERA to 1.35 following his second win on the year.
Brennyn Cutts went the final two innings in relief to close out the contest.
Jack Kelly and Chase Stanke led Minnesota with two hits apiece as the Gophers scattered seven hits in the contest. Kelly, Stanke, and Kyle Bork added doubles in the loss.
Aiden Maldonado (0-2) took the loss after going 4.1 innings allowing six hits and six runs while striking out five.
How They Scored
- Miguel Rivera connected on a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the first inning scoring Tyler Nelson and Jordan Schaffer to stake the Sycamores to the early 3-0 lead.
- Jack Kelly reached on an Indiana State error in the bottom of the first allowing Brett Bateman to score, narrowing the ISU lead down to 3-1.
- The Sycamores broke the game open in the top of the fifth as Indiana State scored eight runs in the inning with Schaffer and Grant Magill both recording multi-hit innings, while Sean Ross and Randall Diaz both drove in two runs in the inning to put ISU up 11-1.
- Sean Ross (triple), Parker Stinson (single), and Jackson Taylor (single) all drove in RBI for Indiana State in the top of the eighth to put the Sycamores ahead 14-1.
- Kelly pushed two runs across for Minnesota in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double cutting the Sycamores lead down to 14-3.
- Isaiah Thompson (single) and Magill (sacrifice fly) drove in the final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin.

- Jordan Schaffer's four-hit game extended his team-leading 17 game hitting streak dating back to the 2021 season. The 17-game streak also matches the longest streak in Schaffer's career, also dating back to the 2021 season.
- Diego Gines added a fifth-inning single in the contest to extend his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games giving Indiana State two players with double-digit hitting streaks.
- Miguel Rivera's first-inning home run marked the fourth consecutive game an Indiana State player has homered and back-to-back games ISU has had a player connected on a home run in the first inning.
- Josue Urdaneta has hit safely in all six games in the 2022 season following his RBI single in the fifth inning.
- Indiana State's 16 runs marked the Sycamores second consecutive game scoring double-digits – the first time that's happened since May 25, 2019 when ISU topped Dallas Baptist in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 10-6 and 16-3.
- Indiana State's 16 runs were the most since ISU scored 16 in the win over Dallas Baptist back on May 25, 2019 in the Missouri Valley Championship game.
- Indiana State's 22 hits marked the first time the Sycamores eclipsed the 20-hit mark since recording 21 at Austin Peay on February 18, 2017.
- Josue Urdaneta, Jackson Taylor, and Isaiah Thompson all drove in their first RBI of the 2022 season in the win.
- Sean Ross connected on the Sycamores' first triple of the year and ISU's first since May 20, 2021 at Evansville.
- Indiana State improved to 4-1 all-time against the Gophers with the win.
