Eighth-inning rally leads Sycamores past Minnesota in Florida finale

FT. MYERS, Fla. – It took until the eighth inning, but Indiana State's offense erupted for the third time this weekend as the Sycamores utilized a 10-run inning to come from behind and top host Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium, 14-8.

Trailing 6-3 and struggling to connect against the Minnesota (2-6) pitching staff at that point of the game, the Sycamores (5-2) sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning with Luis Hernandez providing the big hit to swing the momentum to Indiana State. Hernandez's two-out, three-run single scored Parker Stinson, Daunte Majors, and Diego Gines and gave the Sycamores the 7-6 lead in the inning.

Before the inning let out, the Sycamores add a two-run Aaron Beck single and a pair of RBI doubles from Josue Urdaneta and Isaiah Thompson to firmly seize control of the game with the 13-6 lead. Overall, eight consecutive Sycamores reached base during the two-out rally in the decisive frame.

Stinson connected on his first home run of the 2022 season to lead the Sycamores hitters as three different Indiana State players finished with multi-hit contests. Urdaneta and Gines both scored three times, while Beck, Thompson, Stinson, and Hernandez all finished with multi-RBI contests.

Joey Hurth (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as the sophomore right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings in relief. The Hopkins, Minn. native struck out five and surrendered two walks in the scoreless outing.

Luke Patzner took the no-decision in the start after allowing six hits and four earned runs over the opening inning. Jared Spencer struck out four in 3.1 innings of relief, while Connor Fenlong went the final two frames to complete the contest.

Kyle Bork and Jack Kelly both homered for Minnesota as the Gophers suffered their second loss of the weekend to the Sycamores. Bork finished 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs, while Kelly's three-run home run in the bottom of the first sparked the Gophers offense.

Will Semb (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs in 0.1 innings. J.P. Massey went 5.1 innings in effective relief for Minnesota as the Gophers sent six pitchers to the mound in the contest.
