Parisi’s strong start, Schaffer, Ross homers lead Indiana State past Merrimack

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Jack Parisi put together six strong innings, while Jordan Schaffer and Sean Ross both homered as Indiana State topped Merrimack on Friday afternoon at Centennial Park, 14-2.
 
Parisi (1-1) scattered five hits and two runs while posting a career-high 13 strikeouts in his first win in the Sycamores (3-2) victory. The grad transfer went a season-high six innings before turning the ball over to Lane Miller and Will Goebel to close out the win.
 
Schaffer's leadoff home run tied the game up in the bottom of the first, while Sean Ross connected on a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to power the Sycamores to a 17-hit game. Diego Gines was 4-for-6 from the plate with three runs and two RBI to lead six Indiana State players with multi-hit games against the Warriors.
 
Parker Stinson added a career-high four RBI with a pair of two-run singles in his final two at-bats of the game. Additional Indiana State leaders in the contest include Josue Urdaneta tying Gines with a team-high three runs scored, while Grant Magill went 3-for-4 from the plate.
 
Timmy Kalantzakos (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound in Merrimack's 2022 season debut. He went 2.2 innings allowing seven hits and six runs while walking two in the loss. Tyghe Healy and Jack Collins closed out the final 5.1 innings in relief.
 
How They Scored
  • Bryant Skurbe singled home Alex Haba in the top of the first inning to put Merrimack ahead early in the contest.
  • Jordan Schaffer tied the game up in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff solo home run, while Diego Gines added a RBI single scoring Miguel Rivera to give the Sycamores the 2-1 lead.
  • Gines sparked a four-run, five-hit bottom of the third inning with a RBI double, while Tyler Nelson singled home two runs as the Sycamores jumped ahead 6-1.
  • Anthony Gentile singled in Andrew Selima in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Indiana State lead down to 6-2.
  • Indiana State sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with Sean Ross' three-run home run sparking the six-run inning. Parker Stinson added a two-run single, while Randall Diaz added a RBI base hit to put the Sycamores ahead 12-2.
  • Stinson added the final two runs of the game with a pair of RBI singles scoring Gines and Josue Urdaneta in the eighth inning to provide the final margin at 14-2.
News & Notes
  • Jack Parisi's 13-strikeout game marked the Sycamores second-most strikeouts over the past decade, putting him two behind Geremy Guerrero's 15 strikeouts at Florida International last season on March 5.
  • Parisi's double-digit K game was Indiana State's first 10-strikeout game since Tristan Weaver struck out 10 batters at Missouri State on May 8, 2021.
  • Jordan Schaffer extended his team-leading hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Schaffer was also hit by a pitch in the win.
  • Schaffer's home run was Indiana State's third of the season and his first since May 29, 2021 against Dallas Baptist.
  • Sean Ross' three-run home run was his first home run since April 1, 2021 against Saint Louis.
  • Diego Gines' four-hit game continued his nine-game hitting streak dating back to last year and was his 10th multi-hit game over his Sycamore career.
  • Grant Magill's three-hit game was the 10th multi-hit contest of his ISU career.
  • Sean Ross' two-hit game was the 14th of his career.
  • Josue Urdaneta's two-hit game marked his team-leading third multi-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to five consecutive games on the 2022 season.
  • Tyler Nelson and Parker Stinson both added multi-hit contests in the Indiana State win.
  • Lane Miller and Will Goebel added scoreless relief appearances on the mound for ISU with Miller recording a pair of strikeouts.
  • A season-high five Indiana State players were hit by a pitch in the game, one more than the four Sycamores that were plunked against Ohio State on February 19, 2022.
  • Indiana State's 14 runs marked the first double-digit run-scoring game of the season and the most runs the Sycamores scored since they put up 14 on May 20, 2021 at Evansville.
  • Indiana State improved to 1-0 all-time against the Warriors with the win.
