Glanton’s career day spoiled by Beacons

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.Mya Glanton had a career-high 25 points along with 14 rebounds Sunday afternoon, but Valparaiso used a 48-point second half to squeak past Indiana State, 74-69, inside the Hulman Center.
 
Natalia Lalic added 16 points off the bench for the Sycamores, while Arianna Smith and Del'Janae Williams had eight points apiece. Lalic and Caitlin Anderson also had four assists each.
 
Indiana State led 19-8 after the first quarter, but Valpo responded with a strong second quarter to make it a one-possession game at the halftime break. The Beacons shot 63 percent from the field in the second half while making 20 free throws in the last 20 minutes to eke out a narrow win, despite Glanton scoring 20 in the second half for the Sycamores.
 
First Half
Indiana State jumped out to an early double-digit lead, as the Sycamores held Valparaiso scoreless for the first 6:50 of the game. Williams and Marie Hunter opened the scoring with baskets on back-to-back possessions to kickstart a 9-0 run to begin the game. Lalic knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter, the last one coming just before the buzzer to send Indiana State to the second quarter up 19-8.
 
Smith opened the scoring in the second quarter with a layup, but the Sycamores struggled for most of the quarter. Indiana State managed just 10 points in the period, as Valparaiso was able to make a run and get back in the game. The Beacons hit four 3-pointers in the quarter, including three during an 11-2 run, to cut Indiana State's lead to 29-26 at the half.
 
Second Half
Glanton got to work early in the third quarter, scoring eight points in the first four minutes as Indiana State increased its lead to nine, 40-31. The visitors responded with an 11-0 run, though, taking the lead in the process for the first time in the game. The teams traded scoring possessions throughout the final four minutes as the quarter, as Valparaiso took a slim 51-50 lead into the final frame.
 
Indiana State was able to retake the lead midway through the quarter on a Glanton jumper and extended its advantage to four following a Lalic 3-pointer. With the teams even at 61-all at the final media timeout, it was the Beacons who were able to pull ahead late. Despite four points from Lalic in the final minutes, Valparaiso was able to escape the Hulman Center with a five-point win.
 
Inside the Statistics
  • Indiana State outrebounded Valparaiso 39-29, including a 22-4 advantage in offensive rebounds.
  • Indiana State forced 16 turnovers Sunday afternoon, marking the 19th game this season where the Sycamores have forced at least 15 turnovers.
  • Valparaiso shot 31 free throws Sunday, the most by a Sycamore opponent since Drake had 47 on Jan. 17, 2020. In comparison, Indiana State had just 14 attempts from the charity stripe Sunday.
 
News & Notes
  • Indiana State retired Sycamore Athletics Hall of Fame member Amy Hile's No. 15 Sunday afternoon. Hile is the program's all-time leading scorer and also ranks second in program history in rebounds.
  • In addition to a career-high 25 points, Mya Glanton's 14 rebounds were also her most against a Valley opponent in her career.
  • Glanton had her second game with 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds this season, as she also accomplished the feat against Western Michigan (22 points, 16 rebounds).
  • Natalia Lalic's 16-point game snapped a streak of four games in single-digit scoring. She also tied her career-high of four 3-pointers in the process.
