CARBONDALE, Ill. –
Mya Glanton finished one point shy of her second straight double-double Thursday night, but it wasn't enough as Southern Illinois defeated visiting Indiana State, 63-46, inside the Banterra Center.
Glanton finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, while
Marie Hunter also had nine points for the Sycamores.
Del'Janae Williams and
Arianna Smith had eight points each.
Natalia Lalic returned to the starting lineup and added seven points and a game-high five assists, while Smith also tallied five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Indiana State had a four-point lead late in the first quarter, but SIU closed the quarter on a 5-0 run and never looked back. The Sycamores remained within two possessions for most of the first half, but a third-quarter scoring drought proved costly. Despite shooting 43 percent from the field in the fourth, the Sycamores couldn't recover.
First Half
Marie Hunter opened the scoring with a pull-up jumper in what was a back-and-forth opening quarter. Neither team led by more than four points in the period, with back-to-back baskets from
Arianna Smith and
Del'Janae Williams putting Indiana State ahead 12-8. The Sycamores went scoreless over the final 3:29, though, as SIU was able to take a slim 13-12 lead into the second.
Indiana State's scoring drought continued early in the second, as the Salukis scored the first six points of the quarter to extend their lead to seven, 19-12. SIU led by as many as nine before the Sycamores closed the quarter strong. Hunter connected for baskets on back-to-back possessions and Williams made a fastbreak layup to close the half, as the teams went to the intermission with SIU ahead 29-24.
Second Half
Glanton opened the second-half scoring with a jumper to make it a one-possession game, but that was the closest the Sycamores got in the second half. The Sycamores went on another extended scoring drought midway through the quarter, allowing SIU to extend its lead into double-digits with an 8-0 run. Indiana State got a pair of late baskets from Glanton and Williams, but faced a 42-32 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Back-to-back baskets from Smith and Hunter in the early stages of the fourth cut Southern Illinois' lead to single-digits and gave the Sycamores life as ISU's defense kept the Salukis in check. SIU responded with a 5-0 run, though, and Indiana State found itself in a hole it couldn't recover from. The Salukis closed with a 7-0 run and kept their undefeated record at home intact with a 63-46 win.
