PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Indiana State split the doubleheader on Sunday at Centennial Park as the Sycamores topped Marshall in the early game, 9-7, before falling in the evening contest to Ohio State, 9-8.
The Sycamores (2-2) utilized a late-inning rally scoring six unanswered runs in the opening contest against Marshall.

The nightcap saw Indiana State jump ahead early over the Buckeyes (3-0), but Ohio State rallied back to top the Sycamores courtesy of a five-run eighth inning.
Indiana State 9, Marshall 7
Indiana State scored six unanswered runs late in the contest as the Sycamores rallied back to top Marshall in the first game of the day, 9-7.
Trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth,
Aaron Beck brought home the tying run with a bases-loaded walk scoring
Jordan Schaffer to tie the game up at 7-7.
Randall Diaz followed with the go-ahead pinch-hit two-run single to right field scoring

The Sycamores did not waste the opportunity as
Connor Fenlong hurled a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth for his second save of the weekend to close out the Indiana State win.
Jordan Schaffer provided the spark on the top of the lineup for the Sycamores with a 3-for-4 outing and two runs in the contest. Gines scored three times and added a RBI, while Sears (1-for-3, two RBI, two runs) connected on the Sycamores' first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to start the late rally.
Brennyn Cutts (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2022 season going 0.2 innings in relief in the eighth. The Sycamores utilized six pitchers overall in the game with
Jared Spencer recording the no-decision in his first start of the year. Fenlong (S, 2) closed out the game with a 1-2-3 frame recording a strikeout in his second save.
Kyle Schaefer and Ryan Leitch both homered for the Thundering Herd in the losing effort. Schaefer went 3-for-5 from the plate and added a RBI double to his totals to pace Marshall, while Luke Edwards, Leitch, and Cole Williams all posted multi-hit games.
Reliever Cody Sharp (0-1) took the loss for the Herd allowing three unearned runs and two hits over 1.1 innings. Ryan Capuano went the first four innings in the no-decision, while Nicholas Weyrich and Sam Thompson both saw action on the mound.
How They Scored
- Williams put the Herd ahead in the top of the first inning with a RBI single to right scoring Schaefer as Marshall took the early lead.
- A Schaefer RBI double, a Leitch RBI single, and a Williams RBI single put Marshall up 4-0 in the top of the third before the Sycamores escaped the inning.
- Indiana State took two back in the fourth as Miguel Rivera and Parker Stinson connected on RBI singles in the inning scoring Gines and Beck to cut the lead down to 4-2.
- Daniel Carinci's RBI double in the fifth inning scored Leitch to push the Herd lead back to 5-2.
- Gines pushed across his first RBI of the contest with a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the fifth scoring Schaffer and cutting the lead down to 5-3.
- Marshall connected on a pair of solo home runs in the seventh with Schaefer and Leitch both going deep to put the Herd lead at 7-3.
- Indiana State rallied back in the bottom of the seventh as Sears connected on a two-run shot scoring Josue Urdaneta to start the three-run inning. Gines later scored in the frame on a Luis Hernandez groundout to put the score at 7-6.
- The Sycamores closed out the comeback in the bottom of the eighth as Beck drew a bases-loaded walk scoring Schaffer, while Diaz followed with a two-run single to right field pushing the go-ahead runs across the plate.
Ohio State 9, Indiana State 8
Ohio State utilized a five-run top of the eighth to cap the come-from-behind win over the Sycamores in Indiana State's final game of the opening weekend of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
The Sycamores built an 8-0 lead through the first four innings sparked by a pair of
Tyler Nelson RBI hits and
Mike Sears' two-run home run. However, the Buckeyes rallied back with Brent Todys connecting on a pinch-hit two-run double to tie the game in the top of the eighth, and Trey Lipsey out the go-ahead single scoring Josh McAlister to secure the Ohio State win.
Nelson paced the Sycamores offense with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate. The Sophomore outfielder added his first double of the season and drove in two runs while also scoring twice. Sears homered for the second time in as many games with his shot in the fourth inning, while
Jordan Schaffer scored twice in the loss.
Connor Fenlong (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Sycamores after going 0.1 innings in the relief effort. Luke Patzer put together a strong outing in his first start of the season as the redshirt sophomore went five innings allowing five hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out five.
Jose Cabrera added two innings in relief, while
Cameron Holycross,
Will Goebel, and
Lane Miller all saw time on the mound.
Marcus Ernst was the sparkplug atop the Ohio State lineup with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Zach Dezenzo and Todys added a pair of multi-RBI efforts, while Archer Brookman connected on a home run in the win.
Tim Baird (1-0) ended a Sycamore rally in the bottom of the seventh inning in picking up the win, while TJ Brock (S) earned the save after going the final two innings in scoreless relief. Will Pfennig took the no-decision after allowing all eight Indiana State runs (five earned) over the first four innings.
How They Scored
- Miguel Rivera singled home Josue Urdaneta in the bottom of the first inning to give the Sycamores the early 1-0 lead.
- Indiana State added three runs in the second, two coming on a fielding error by the Ohio State centerfielder, while Nelson doubled home Parker Stinson to give the Sycamores the 4-0 lead.
- ISU added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Nelson and Schaffer put together a pair of RBI hits, before Mike Sears cleared the bases with a two-run shot over the left field fence to put the score at 8-0 Sycamores.
- Ohio State battled back with three runs in the fifth sparked by Brookman's solo home run, while Dezenzo connected on a RBI single, before coming around to score on a balk to cut the lead to 8-3.
- Kade Kern cut the lead down to 8-4 with a RBI single in the seventh scoring Ernst to make the margin 8-4.
- The Buckeyes pushed five runs across in the eighth with Todys' two-run double tying the game up, before Lipsey's single gave Ohio State the 9-8 advantage.
