McCauley Drops 30 Points as Sycamores Roll Past Redhawks

OXFORD, Ohio – The Indiana State Sycamores took care of business on the road Saturday afternoon, using a strong offensive first half to roll past the Miami Redhawks 88-61. Courvoisier McCauley put up a game-high 30 points to help the Sycamores (8-1, 1-0 MVC) win their fourth straight game.
 
Indiana State shot lights out in the first half, going 19-for-32 from the field including 11-of-19 from three. McCauley hit back-to-back threes in an early 8-0 run that put ISU up 8-2, and he was already in double figures by 14:05 with another triple that pushed the lead to 18-6.
 
Miami (3-5, 0-0 MAC) cut its deficit back down to single digits at 29-20 with 7:45 to go in the first half, but then the Sycamores went on an 18-0 run in which they shot 4-of-4 beyond the arc to go up 53-24 with 1:44 to go in the opening frame. Indiana State led 58-28 at the half, and McCauley nearly outscored the Redhawks as a team with his 24 first-half points.
 
The Sycamores got off to a much slower start in the second half, but a Zach Hobbs triple capped a 9-0 run that gave ISU its largest lead of the game at 69-32 with 13:24 to go. Masen Miller would close the scoring in the game for the Sycamores with a trey at 4:03 and another with 43 seconds remaining in the game.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • ISU finished with a 49.2 percent shooting clip from the field including 47.1 percent from three while holding Miami to 33.9 percent from the field and 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) from three. Eight different Sycamores hit a 3-pointer in the game led by McCauley with six.
  • The Sycamores dished out 24 assists on 30 buckets in the game, and 10 different Sycamores recorded an assist, led by Trenton Gibson with a Division I career-high of eight.
  • Robbie Avila was just one rebound shy of another double-double with nine boards and 13 points. Cameron Henry and Kailex Stephens also scored in double-digits with 10 points apiece.
  • ISU outrebounded Miami 39-32, led by Avila's nine and McCauley's seven.
  • The Sycamores committed 13 turnovers and allowed just seven points off those turnovers while converting 16 Miami turnovers into 13 points.
News & Notes
  • At 8-1, the Sycamores have continued their best start to a season since 2005-06 when the team also started 8-1.
  • The Sycamores improve to 6-3 against Miami Ohio all-time with their first win inside Millett Hall.
  • Saturday was Courvoisier McCauley's second 30-point effort this season, tying his Division I career-high.
  • ISU's 16 3-pointers are the most in a single game since hitting 17 against Indiana in the team's season-opener in 2017.
  • ISU is the only Valley team to never trail by 10 points or more this season. The Sycamores trailed by a season-high eight points against Kansas City, which turned out to be their lone loss so far this year.
  • The Sycamores have led at halftime every game this season with today's 30-point halftime lead being a season-high.
  • ISU's 24 assists today are the most in a single game for ISU since dishing out 25 against Evansville in an 86-60 win on Jan. 4, 2003.
