Hamilton, Kaelin have career nights in four-set loss Friday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Kaitlyn Hamilton recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career Friday, but visiting Belmont outlasted Indiana State in four set (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23) inside ISU Arena.

Hamilton tied her career high of 17 kills and added 11 digs, while Emma Kaelin also notched a double-double with 44 kills and 11 digs. Storm Suhre and Mallory Keller added 13 kills apiece for the Sycamores, who hit .235 for the match.

Indiana State got off to a hot start from an attacking standpoint, hitting .538 in the opening set with just two attack errors. Back-to-back kills by Keller gave Indiana State a 7-6 lead early in the set, one they never relinquished. Keller and Hamilton led the way for the Trees early on with a combined 10 kills in the first set, with Keller providing the final kill in a 25-19 opening-set win.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led by more than two points at any stage. Back-to-back errors gave Indiana State an 11-9 lead in the set, but the Sycamores couldn't add on to the difference. Belmont rallied to take a late lead and, despite a kill by Hamilton and an ace from Melina Tedrow, held on to win the set 25-23. Hamilton and Suhre combined for 11 kills in the second.

Neither team gained momentum in the third set until a Belmont service ace gave the Bruins a 10-7 lead. Indiana State rallied with kills by Keller, Jamie Brown and Taylor Shelton to the the set at 12-all but never managed to go in front. Back-to-back kills by Keller late in the set made it 20-18, but Belmont answered with the next five points to win the third 25-18.

Indiana State got out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth, using a pair of block assists by Keller and Suhre to go in front. The Sycamores maintained their lead for most of the set, going ahead 19-16 following a kill by Hamilton and a Belmont error. A late four-point run for the Bruins proved to be the difference despite Hamilton notching three kills in the final nine points, as Belmont hung on to take the set 25-23.
