Late Sycamore rally falls short against Redbirds

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.Anna McKendree scored a career-high 18 points Friday evening, including 10 in the fourth quarter, but visiting Illinois State withstood a late Indiana State comeback attempt in a 66-58 Sycamore setback inside the Hulman Center.

McKendree was 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Del'Janae Williams added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Marie Hunter and Mya Glanton had eight and seven points, respectively.  Tonysha Curry and Caitlin Anderson led Indiana State with six rebounds apiece.

Illinois State used an 11-0 run after the Sycamores scored the first two points and never looked back. The Redbirds scored 37 of their 66 points in the first half to open up a double-digit lead and led by as many as 20 midway through the third quarter, with four starters scoring in double-figures.

First Half
Marie Hunter opened the scoring with a fastbreak layup off a Del'Janae Williams steal, but Illinois State ran off 11 straight points and never looked back. Indiana State got within seven on multiple occasions in the quarter, the last time coming on a Williams layup, but Illinois State took a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.

The Sycamores opened the second on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a pair of Anna McKendree 3-pointers, cutting the deficit to three in the process. The visitors closed the half, however, on a 15-4 run and took a 37-23 lead into the break as Indiana State couldn't get into a rhythm on the offensive end.

Second Half
Indiana State cut into its deficit early with layups by Mya Glanton and Hunter, but another lengthy Redbird run extended the Illinois State advantage to 20 midway through the quarter. The Sycamores started to find their groove late in the third quarter, going on a 10-2 run with Natalia Lalic accounting for five points during the run, but still found themselves down 55-40 heading into the final period.

The Sycamores scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter on layups by Williams and McKendree. Illinois State had an answer for every Indiana State run, though, and maintained a double-digit lead until the final minutes of the game. Indiana State closed the game on a 10-3 run, with McKendree scoring eight during the process, but it was not enough as Illinois State held on for an eight-point win.
