TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Marie Hunter scored a career-high 22 points Sunday afternoon, pacing a balanced Indiana State offense past Bradley inside the Hulman Center, 73-57.
Hunter also pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while
Natalia Lalic added 13 points.
Arianna Smith tied her career high with 11 points off the bench with
Caitlin Anderson and
Mya Glanton adding nine and eight, respectively.
Indiana State broke an early 8-all tie with a 16-0 run and never looked back. The Sycamores led wire-to-wire, extending their lead to as many as 21 in the third quarter after a pair of Smith free throws. ISU had a double-digit lead for the final 33:26 of the contest and used consistent pressure to force 20 Bradley turnovers.
First Half
Lalic was the hot hand for the Sycamores in the first quarter, scoring 11 points in the opening period. The Adelaide, Australia, native was responsible for Indiana State's first eight points and connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter. A Glanton putback with 5:50 left in the quarter kickstarted a 16-0 Sycamore run that set the tone for the rest of the game. Six different Indiana State players scored during the run, which broke open what was a tie game. By the end of the quarter, ISU built a 24-11 lead and kept its foot on the gas pedal.
Indiana State continued to build on its lead in the second quarter, using its defense to stifle Bradley to just one field goal in its first four possessions of the quarter.
Del'Janae Williams got in on the scoring with a driving layup as the Sycamores got contributions from everyone on the offensive end. Bradley cut the ISU lead to 11 late in the quarter on an Isis Fitch 3-pointer, but the Sycamores responded with baskets by
Essy Latu and Smith, closing the half on a 7-1 run to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room.
Second Half
Bradley came out of the locker room on fire, hitting four of its first five shots to cut the Indiana State lead to 10 with 7:18 left. That, however, was the closest the Braves got for the remainder of the contest, as a Williams layup kickstarted a 10-2 run to push ISU's lead to 53-35. Williams, Hunter and Anderson all contributed to the Sycamore scoring run, which forced a Bradley timeout and put momentum back on ISU's side. A Smith putback late in the quarter extended the ISU lead to 20 for the first time in the game and while Bradley tried to make a late run, the Sycamores maintained control with a 61-42 lead heading into the final period.
Neither team shot the ball well to begin the fourth quarter, but the defensive intensity was still there for Indiana State. The Sycamores forced Bradley into a 2-for-7 mark with a pair of turnovers in the first four minutes of the quarter, while Hunter continued to cause issues for the Braves with baskets on back-to-back possessions to push Indiana State's lead back up to 20. Bradley scored the last four points of the game, but by then the outcome was already decided, as the Sycamores wrapped up their second MVC win of the season.
