TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's golf program will tee off the 2021-22 season this weekend at the Redbird Invitational held at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.
Â
The 54-hole tournament will be played on the campus of Illinois State University as the Sycamores prepare for their 11th season under the helm of head coach
Greg Towne. Indiana State is looking to get back on the course and competing this season after wrapping up the 2021 MVC Championships with an eighth-place result.
Â
The Sycamores lineup this weekend features All-Conference selection
Lauren Green, while a tough battle through this week's qualifying put
Chelsea Morrow,
Kristen Hobbs,
Iyoun Chew, and
Molly Lee into the mix in the first tournament of the fall.
Â
Head Coach
Greg Towne is looking forward to his team getting back into the competition mindset and utilizing this fall season as an opportunity to prepare for the spring.
Â
"Fall is a time to grow, learn, be curious and see what you can figure out," Towne said. "Some of our players weren't able to play this offseason due to various COVID restrictions internationally, but everyone showed up in really good shape. Everyone has been in our system for at least a year now and we've had several athletes embrace the challenge. We're going to make them think a lot, process faster, and build toward a good season."
Â
Green headlines the group heading into the 2021-22 season. The Merseyside, England native paced the Sycamores with a 78.13 stroke average on the year and put together a pair of top-10 finishes to go with her top-five result at the conference tournament. Green's final-round 77 paced all players in the final round of the postseason tournament as the now-junior battled the elements to finish among the conference leaders. Her accolades continued in the postseason as she earned MVC Scholar-Athlete team honors for the second consecutive season.
Â
Kristen Hobbs and
Chelsea Morrow stood out in the early qualifying for the Sycamores with the duo expected to see time in the lineup this season. Hobbs is coming off a season where she averaged 82.25 strokes per event as a true sophomore while seeing time in the lineup in all 16 events.
Â
Morrow also came on strong throughout the 2020-21 season and posted the second-lowest stroke total on the roster throughout the year. Her 80.13 strokes per round knocked off over three strokes from her freshman score, while her low-round 74 at the ISU Invitational tied for the team's lowest round on the season.
Â
The offseason was particularly challenging for the international players on the Sycamores roster this summer with courses locked down due to COVID concerns. However,
Iyoun Chew and
Molly Lee have quickly shaken off any rust heading into the fall campaign.
Â
Chew is back on the roster looking to build off a strong first-year campaign that saw her line up in all 16 rounds while averaging 83.94 strokes per round. She capped her 2020-21 season finishing third on the team and 33rd overall in the field at the MVC Championships and tied her lowest round of the season (79) over the first round at the conference championships.
Â
Lee turned in cards in seven rounds in the 2020-21 season with a season-best round 76 coming in the first round of the ISU Invitational. The Kahsiung, Taiwan native has also thrown her hat into the ring for an opportunity to see action on the course this season with the entire roster competing for playing time on the travel roster this year.
Â
First up, for the Sycamores will be a strong test as Indiana State will compete in a field that will feature a nine Missouri Valley Conference teams. It will be one of the few events this year that the Sycamores will get to see a majority of their conference competition as the tournament jumpstarts the 2021-22 golf schedule.
Â
The Sycamores will continue on the road at the Austin Peay Invite on September 27-28, the Butler Invitational on October 4-5, and the Ozarks Invitational on Oct. 18-20 to wrap up the fall schedule.
