Sycamore Athletics Third in MVC All-Sports Trophy Race

ST. LOUIS – Indiana State ended a highly successful athletic season with a third-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy race, the Valley announced Friday morning.

Indiana State (6.266) finished third in the all-sports trophy race representing its best finish in the league race since finishing second in 2013-14.

In 2016-17, the MVC introduced a new point system to determine the league's all-sports champion. The All-Sports Trophy is based on a school's average finish in each of the sponsored championships by the Missouri Valley Conference. Teams are awarded 10 points for first, nine for second, eight for third, etc., and the total accumulated points are divided by the number of sports in which a particular school competes. For sports not sponsored by every MVC school, the points decrease by the number of competing schools (i.e., in a sport where eight teams compete, 10/8 = 1.25, so point totals decrease by 1.25; 1st = 10, 2nd = 8.75, 3rd = 7.5, etc.).

Illinois State claimed the 2020-21 All-Sports Trophy with six team titles and an aggregate score of 7.842. Missouri State placed second at 7.137.

Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regular-season competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet.

On the strength of four top-three finishes inside MVC play this season among 14 league sponsored sports, the Sycamores earned their highest rank since the 2013-14 season when ISU tied a school record with a second place mark. Indiana State's highest mark of second has occurred twice since 1993 in 1999-00 and 2013-14.

The highlights for Indiana State this year included a strong campaign from the baseball squad who is currently competing in the Vanderbilt Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Sycamore baseball spent multiple weeks within the top-25 this season and placed second in the Valley behind a record of 30-19 (14-10 MVC), falling only to Dallas Baptist in the league tournament.

Sycamore soccer also had one of their best seasons in program history, placing second in the Valley with a school-record six MVC victories. The spring 2021 campaign also marked the biggest turnaround in program history in Valley play after the Trees one just one match in the 2019 season.

On the track, Indiana State's men claimed a runner-up finish at the Indoor Track & Field Championships, falling to Northern Iowa by just 2.5 points. The Sycamore women also had success at the MVC Championships, placing third as a team at the outdoor meet. The Blue & White finished with a total of six individual champions as well.

Continuing to find success in the pool, Indiana State Swimming & Diving secured their third-straight third-place finish at the MVC Championships. The Trees secured an 8-3 dual meet record, including six victories at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.

The 2020-21 campaign is not over for the Sycamores as the baseball team competes this weekend at the Vanderbilt Regional while Ryann Porter of Sycamore track and field has qualified for the NCAA Championships.
