NORMAL, Ill. – After sweeping a Friday doubleheader, No. 23 Indiana State baseball was shutout for the first time since February 23, 2020 as Illinois State picked up a 5-0 victory at a rain-drenched Duffy Bass Field Saturday.
Left-handed closer
Tyler Grauer made his first start since 2017 as the Sycamores (15-8, 2-1 MVC) manage their way through the first four-game weekend series of the season. Grauer retired the first three batters he faced before the Redbirds (12-17, 3-4 MVC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second.
Illinois State's Jake McCaw picked up a one-out hit-by-pitch and would take second on a wild pitch before coming home to score two batters later when Hayden Jones doubled to the gap in left. Ryan Cermak scampered home from third on a chopper to second before Grauer was able to stop the damage with a strikeout.
The Redbirds added to their lead in the fifth after a leadoff single came around to score when Cermak picked up a base hit through the left side of the infield. Illinois State put insurance runs on the board in the eighth on two-run home run by Jones.
The Sycamores struggled at the plate, recoding just six base hits while going 0-for-15 with runners on base. Jordan Lussier was strong over seven innings for the Redbirds as he improved to 4-1. He struck out five and issued just one walk. Derek Salata picked up a two-inning save – his fifth of the season.
Grauer took the loss for ISU, falling to 1-1 on the year. The Shawnee, Kan. native went 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out three of the 17 batters he faced.
Will Buraconak went 2.2 innings in relief, striking out two.
Seth Gergely recorded the only extra-base hit for the Sycamores with a double in the seventh.
Cermak and Jones led the way for Illinois State as the duo combined for three hits each while Jones drove in a trio of runs as well. Hays added two hits for the Redbirds.
The two squads are set to return to the diamond for the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
