Sycamores Drop Weekend Opener to Illinois State, 3-1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – Indiana State volleyball fell for the first time at home this season inside ISU Arena as Illinois State defeated the Sycamores, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 19-25) Friday night. With the loss, the Sycamores fell to 9-5 overall and 1-3 in Missouri Valley Conference action while the Redbirds moved to 7-10 and 2-2 in MVC play.
 
Senior libero Melina Tedrow accounted for a team high 25 digs -- moving into fourth place in program history in the category. Terre Haute native Chloe Mason led ISU with 25 assists while Emma Kaelin dished out 19.
 
Leading the way for the Sycamores on the night on the offensive side of the ball was Mallory Keller who finished with 13 kills while Kaitlyn Hamilton added 11 in the match.
 
Tamara Otene (21), Sarah Kushner (17) and Aliyah Moore (12) each notched double-digit kills for the Redbirds as ILS finished with a .271 hitting percent while the Sycamores hit .195 over four sets.
 
Set One - ILS 25, ISU 22
  • Indiana State trailed by two at 4-6 before reeling off a 6-0 run to take the lead.
  • The Redbirds answered with a 7-3 run to tie the set before ending on a 14-6 run to claim the set.
  • Illinois State outhit Indiana State .256 to .140.
  • Otene led the ILS charge with six kills in the set while Kushner and Moore added five each.
  • Keller finished with four kills on 10 attacks to lead ISU.
 
Set Two - ISU 25, ILS 23
  • The set featured 10 ties and four lead changes.
  • ISU was able to counter many of Otene's attacks as Tedrow finished with six of the teams' 17 digs in the set.
  • Seven Sycamores recorded kills as Hamilton led the charge with six.
  • ISU hit .375 while the Redbirds hit .316.
 
Set Three - ILS 25, ISU 20
  • Illinois State converted 60 percent (12-of-20) of their sideout opportunities while ISU converted just 48 percent (12-of-25).
  • The Redbirds outhit ISU .262 to .163 led by Kushner's five kills.
  • Kaelin assisted on six kills in the set while Mason accounted for six of the Sycamores 19 digs.
 
Set Four - ILS 25, ISU 19
  • ILS jumped out to a 7-4 lead early before extending its lead to 14-9 to force a Sycamore timeout.
  • Indiana State rallied to a one-point deficit at 15-14 before the Redbirds finished the set hot to close out the match.
  • The Sycamores recorded a .105 attacking percent - the lowest of the match while ILS hit .256.
  • Ashley Eck and Mason each tallied a service ace in the set.
 
Indiana State returns to action Saturday evening when the team takes on Bradley. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET from the ISU Arena.
