TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State volleyball ended a three-match losing streak Saturday evening after defeating Valparaiso 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20) inside the ISU Arena. In the win, the Sycamores posted a season-high 19 blocks led by
Kylie Newby who posted a career day with 12 blocks in the match.
Newby led the charge at the net as six Sycamores posted blocks in the match. The Louisville, Kentucky native was a part of nine block assists and three solo blocks -- both career highs for the junior -- while
Madeline Williams also assisted on five blocks.
Mallory Keller joined the block part with one solo block as four block assists in the match.
A trio of Sycamores in
Kaitlyn Hamilton, Williams and Newby tallied nine kills each in the win as ISU outhit Valpo .127 to .041 over four sets of action. Both
Emma Kaelin and
Chloe Mason tallied double-doubles in the match in assists and digs. Mason led the Trees with 17 assists to go with 19 digs while Kaelin went for 12 assists and 10 digs. Libero
Melina Tedrow fell just short of a double-double with a match-high 22 digs and seven assists.
Valpo's Haley Hart led all players with 11 kills while Victoria Bulmahn assisted on 24 of the Beacons' 46 kills. Bella Ravotto recorded 16 digs and six kills for VU.
Set One - Indiana State 25, Valpo 23
- After a 10-10 tie, Indiana State took the lead and never looked back
- Six Sycamores recorded kills led by Williams' five
- ISU outhit the Beacons .286 to .176
- Mason assisted on six of ISU's 13 kills in the set
Set Two - Valpo 25, Indiana State 22
- Valpo reeled off a 4-1 run after being tied at ten en route to the set win
- VU's Hart led all players with six kills in the set while Newby caught fire for ISU with five
- ISU hit its lowest percentage of the match at .081 while Valpo hit .111
Set Three – Indiana State 25, Valpo 20
- Indiana State trailed for much of the set until a 5-1 run midway through to lead 20-15
- The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes
- The Trees held Valpo to a -.087 attacking percentage in the set while blocking eight shots
- Valpo recorded 14 attack errors in the set while also recording three service errors
Set Four – Indiana State 25, Valpo 20
- ISU rallied from a 7-2 deficit to take the set
- After tying the match at 12, ISU went on an 8-1 run and never looked back
- Keller recorded four kills to lead all players in the set while Gall and Hamilton added three each
- ISU held Valpo under a .100 hitting percentage for the second-straight set as the Beacons hit just .018
- Tedrow picked up nine of her 22 digs in the set
Indiana State returns to action Monday night as Missouri State comes to town. First serve is set for 6 p.m. from the ISU Arena.
