CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Indiana State volleyball fell to Northern Iowa 3-2 (25-12, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 11-15) Saturday night inside the Mcleod Center marking the first five-set loss of the season for the Sycamores.
Indiana State (11-7, 3-5 MVC) outhit UNI throughout the match .253 to .153 but nine service errors and 21 attacking errors proved to be the difference.
Six Sycamores recorded seven or more kills led by the duo of
Mallory Keller and
Madeline Williams who accounted for 12 kills each.
Karinna Gall joined the pair in double-digit kills with 11 in the match while also picking up her seventh double-double of the year with 12 digs.
Chloe Mason (23) and
Emma Kaelin (22) were tops on the team in assists while
Melina Tedrow tallied 21 digs to lead all players. Kaelin also accounted for three of ISU's five service aces in the match.
Carly Spies led the Panthers (8-13, 3-5 MVC) with 15 kills on 31 attacks for a .387 hitting percentage. Tayler Alden assisted on 28 Panther kills while Payton Ahrenstorff picked up a team high 18 digs.
Set One - Indiana State 25, UNI 12
- Indiana State converted 83 percent of its sideout opportunities (10-of-12)
- Hamilton led ISU with six kills
- The Sycamores outhit UNI .419 to .031
- ISU never trailed in the set
Set Two – UNI 25, Indiana State 20
- UNI bounced back from a tough first set attack to outhit the Sycamores .333 to .219
- The set featured 10 ties and three lead changes
- Five Panthers accounted for multiple kills while Williams and Gall accounted for the bulk of ISU's offense
Set Three – Indiana State 25, UNI 17
- ISU stepped up its attack to the tune of a .353 set hitting percentage
- Indiana State defense stood strong as UNI hit just .053
- Neither team recorded a block in the set
- Keller led ISU with four kills in the set
Set Four – UNI 25, Indiana State 20
- Both teams hit over .300 with UNI going for a .33 hitting percentage and ISU hitting .302
- UNI blocked three Indiana State attacks
- UNI's Spies went for a match high seven kills in the set
Set Five – UNI 15, Indiana State 11
- UNI edged out Indiana State .143 to .095 in hitting
- Kylie Newby (2) was the lone Sycamore with more than one kill
- UNI picked up four blocks in the set
The Sycamores return to action on Saturday, October 23 when the team travels to Evansville for a 2 p.m. ET match with the Aces.
