Indiana State Downs Western Kentucky on Saturday Night

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Indiana State Softball team defeated Western Kentucky to earn the 7-5 victory and get their revenge from last night.
 
Western Kentucky jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning taking advantage of three ISU errors. WKU added to their lead with a four run third inning on four hits and an Indiana State error.
 
Green Bay answered in the bottom of the first taking advantage of an ISU passed ball to cut the Sycamores lead in half.
 
Leslie Sims led off the fourth inning with a double and Becky Malchow followed with a single advancing Sims to third base. Mallory Marsicek delivered a two out RBI single scoring Sims.
 
Indiana State had a big fifth inning, Cassie Thomerson blasted a two-run homerun pulling the Sycamores within one run. Becky Malchow and Amanda Guercio singled to set up the two-run single from Bella Peterson.
 
Becky Gibbs lead the sixth inning off with a single and TeAnn Bringle doubled to right field. Leslie Sims singled to bring up Becky Malchow with the bases loaded and two outs. Malchow singled bringing in Olivia Patton who pinch ran for Gibbs to give the Sycamores the lead.
 
Lexi Benko took the circle in relief in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on and one out. Benko struck out the next two batters ending the inning.
 
Indiana State added two insurance runs in the seventh thanks to two WKU errors.
 
The Hilltoppers threated in the bottom of the seventh scoring a run, but Lexi Benko closed the door earning her first career save.
 
Kelsey Aikey (5-2) was charged with the loss in 1.0 innings of work for Western Kentucky allowing one run on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Abbey Kruzel (3-2) was credited with the win in 1.0 inning of work, allowing no runs on no hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Lexi Benko earned her first career save pitching 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
