TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State and Evansville battled to a scoreless draw in the MVC opener for both clubs as both goalkeepers recorded seven saves in a warm night in front of 150 fans inside Memorial Stadium.
The Sycamores moved to 2-6-2, 0-0-1 MVC on the season while Evansville is now 1-7-2, 0-0-1 MVC.
The Sycamores held a 19-12 edge in shots, while shots on goal were level at seven each. ISU had six corner kick opportunities in the match while the Purple Aces owned a pair.
Celeste Wahlberg and
Jensen Margheim each took four swings at the net – with each owning a shot on goal.
Anna Holcombe had three shots, including a pair on goal while
Kate Face took three shots with one on frame.
Sidney Ewing and
Olivia Sharar also had a shot on goal in the contest.
Anna Holcombe had a great look at goal in the 95
th minute when she fired a shot at point blank range which bounced off the hands of the Evansville goalkeeper. Holcombe had another look at goal in the 107
th minute when she fired a shot off her right foot from the left side of the field but it sailed on her to end the threat.
ISU looked to move ahead in the contest when they received a corner kick opportunity in the 50
th minute. After
Anna Holcombe sent the ball into play,
Kate Face had a look at the net from 20 yards out but her shot sailed wide left to keep the match scoreless.
Hannah Sullivan came up with a big save in the 71
st minute to keep the score at tied 0-0 when Evansville's Jayme Lee-Hunter fired a rocket towards the goal from 15 yards out but Sullivan got her hands on the ball just before it entered the framework. The save was Sullivan's seventh of the match.
Jensen Margheim had a good look at the net off a corner kick in the 85
th minute as she fired a ball towards the cross bar and Evansville's Till leaped and blocked the ball with her fingertips as the two teams remained scoreless. Neither team could must another shot in the final five minutes of regulation as the match went into overtime. It marked the second consecutive matchup in the series that reached an overtime period.
The Sycamores got off the three of the first four shots in the match, including a strike by
Sidney Ewing in the third minute which was right at the Purple Aces goalkeeper Michaela Till. Cece Wahlberg had a pair of shots in the 10
th minute – the first of which went off the left post and another which resulted in Till's second save of the match.
ISU had its first corner kick opportunity of the match in the 14
th minute when
Anna Holcombe sent a pass into the box but the header by
Danielle Varner was too high and the match remained scoreless. The Sycamores had their best look at goal in the 43
rd minute when
Olivia Sharar was one-one-on with the goalkeeper but her header was just high as the clock wound down on the first half.
The two teams were knotted with four shots on goal each in the opening 45 minutes which the Sycamores held an 8-6 edge in shots. Wahlberg led the way with three shots.
Indiana State concludes the five-match home stand on Saturday, October 5 when they host Valparaiso. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET).
