TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – Freshman Cece Wahlberg staked the Sycamores to an early 1-0 lead and then after Valparaiso battled back to tie it up, fellow freshman
Serra Hanrahan scored in the 77
th minute to give Indiana State the 3-2 victory over the visiting Crusaders in front of 250 fans inside Memorial Stadium.
The Sycamores improved to 3-6-2, 1-0-1 MVC while Valparaiso fell to 0-11-1, 0-2-0 MVC.
Sidney Ewing – who already owns two of the six fastest goals scored in the 19-year history of the program – tried to break through in the fourth minute of this contest but her strike off a pass from
Jensen Margheim was blocked by Valparaiso goalkeeper Kezia Gesell.
Freshman CeCe Wahlberg did break through in the 25
th minute as she took a clean pass from Wahlberg right in front of the goal and pushed the ball past the keeper and into the lower right hand side of the net. That goal gave the Sycamores a 1-0 advantage.
Lauren Torhorst equalized the match in the 46
th minute – just some 55 seconds into the second half – when she struck a ball past the Sycamore goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1.
Ewing would hit the scoring column in the 52
nd minute to put the Sycamores ahead 2-1. She took a pass from Wahlberg from the far corner and Ewing was able to find the upper left corner of the net. But Torhorst scored for the second time in the match – this time in the 53
rd minute – to equalize the match at 2-2.

th minute to push the Sycamores back ahead 3-2. She took the assist on the goal from senior
Katie Sidloski.
The Sycamores held a 16-12 edge in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Sycamores and Crusaders each enjoyed three corner kick opportunities,
Wahlberg led the way with five shots in the match, including two on goal while Ewing added four shots with three coming on goal. Hanrahan posted the game winner on her only shot on the match. Sidloski, Wahlberg and Margheim each added assists in the match.
Danielle Varner also added a shot on frame.
Hannah Sullivan picked up the win in goal for ISU with three saves in the contest.
This was the Sycamores first Missouri Valley Conference win since October 14, 2017 when Indiana State topped Illinois State by the score of 2-1.
The Sycamores travel to Northern Iowa on Saturday, October 12 for a 3:00 p.m. (ET) matchup with the Panthers. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN+.
