Indiana State Falls To Northern Iowa In Overtime

WATERLOO, Iowa – Freshman Celeste Wahlberg scored her team-high fourth goal of the season in the 75th minute to equalize a Missouri Valley Conference road contest at Northern Iowa but the Panthers pushed their second goal into the back of the net late in the first overtime to take a 2-1 decision on a cold and windy day at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.

ISU fell to 3-7-2, 1-1-1 MVC while Northern Iowa improved to 5-7-0, 1-2-0 MVC. The Sycamores were vying for the best start to a conference season in program history with a win or tie.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a goal by Jordyn Rolli to stake UNI to a 1-0 lead. The Sycamores had taken the first three shots in the contest in the opening 10 minutes of the contest.
Wahlberg tied the match up in the 75th minute when she scored from just out the box. It was her fourth goal of the season as she leads the MVC in both shots taken as well as shots on goal.

The tie would hold as the match moved into overtime – the second one of the conference season to reach extra time.

UNI would break the tie and score the golden goal in the 99th minute when Kennedy Rieken punched a ball into the back of the net off the assist from Johnnie Hill. Rieken attacked the goal from the right side of the box and slipped the ball into the top right corner of the framework.

The Panthers enjoyed a 14-7 edge in shots as well as a 6-2 cushion in shots on goal. Wahlberg owned four of the Sycamores seven shots while Danielle Varner, Jensen Margheim and Kate Face owned the others. All told, six of the seven shots by the Sycamores in the contest came from either freshmen or sophomores.

Senior goalkeeper Hannah Sullivan played all 99 minutes in goal and faced 14 shots while recording four saves.

Indiana State returns home on Wednesday, October 16 to face off against Illinois State. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET). Admission to Sycamore Soccer is always free at Memorial Stadium.
