Sycamores And Belmont Battle To 1-1 Draw

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Terre Haute native Liz Humphrey posted her first goal career goal and not only was it timely – it proved to be the deciding factor – in the Sycamores' 1-1 draw against visiting Belmont on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Indiana State moved to 1-6-1 on the season while Belmont moved to 1-4-2.

Belmont scored first in the match in the 16th minute when Julie Garst scored for the third time this season on a one-on-one opportunity that saw the ball sneak past the end line and into the back of the net.

The Bruins would hold a 1-0 advantage for most of the first half when with time waning down in the 45th minute, Terre Haute North Vigo alum Liz Humphrey took a pass from fellow freshman Celeste Wahlberg to knot the match at 1 with just 17 seconds on the clock. Wahlberg moved the ball out wide to the right and fired a cross pass to Humphrey who was waiting in front of the goal to equalize the match.

The Sycamores peppered the goal for an impressive 30 shots in the match, including 16 of which came on goal. Leading the way was Wahlberg with nine shots and five on goal. Danielle Varner tallied five shots as the Sycamores looked to use her height advantage on header opportunities off corner kicks. Jensen Margheim posted four shots, including on goal while Anna Holcome added four shots of her own and three inside the frame work.

ISU entered the match with over 80 percent of their shots and 80 percent of their shots on goal coming from either first or second year players. The Sycamores saw 21 their 30 shots on Sunday come from freshmen or sophomores while 13 of their 16 attempts inside the framework were from the younger group.

Indiana State held a 30-14 edge in shots as well as a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Sycamores posted an 8-5 edge in corner kick opportunities.

In goal, senior Hannah Sullivan played all 110 minutes and recorded seven saves with just the one early goal allowed.

Indiana State stays at home on Sunday, September 22 to face off against Purdue Fort Wayne. Kickoff is set for 3 pm (ET) from Memorial Stadium. All eight Sycamore seniors will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
