Hoosiers Defeat Sycamores In Soccer Exhibition Friendly

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana State continued their preseason practice drills with the first of two exhibition friendly matches as they traveled to Indiana and came away with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Hoosiers on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Freshman Celeste Wahlberg helped the Sycamores control the pace of play in the opening half as she took a pair of shots – the only of the first half for either team. Wahlberg, who hails from South Elgin, Ill., took control of the ball in the middle and top of the scoring zone and put a shot past the goaltender which just sailed high and left of the frame some 20 minutes into the contest.

Then she had another look from the middle of the field as the clock ticked under the 15 minute mark off a feed from Sidney Ewing. This time Walhberg's shot sailed high and to the right of frame to keep the match at a nil-nil deadlock.

Indiana mounted a couple of late offensive charges and were moving towards the goal as time expired before they could put a shot on frame.

Melanie Forbes had the first shot of the day for the Hoosiers on goal and it found the back of the net in the 51st minute. Forbes took a cross pass that was slightly defected and forced a scramble but she pushed the ball past a diving Sullivan for the 1-0 advantage. In the 74th minute, Indiana tacked on a goal by Allie Schlom off another cross pass which ended with a scramble and loose ball in front of the net which allowed the ball to trickle past the goal line. The Hoosiers tacked on a third goal from Chandra Davidson in the late going off a rebound from an earlier nice save by Hannah Sullivan.

All told the Hoosiers held a 9-2 edge in shots, including a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Indiana State heads to the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium on Thursday, August 15 when the Sycamores host Marian (Ind.) at 7 pm (ET). The season opener is set for Friday, August 23 at UMKC – a match that begins at 8 pm (ET).
