Sycamores Take Down Marian In Exhibition Friendly

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State put a shutout on the board against a scrappy Marian team on Thursday night (Aug. 15) in front of 225 fans inside Memorial Stadium as part of a 1-0 victory in the second and final exhibition friendly of the preseason.

Despite the fact that the Sycamores scored the only goal of the match -- their were 29 total shots between the two teams, including a combined 16 shots on goal. Hannah Sullivan recorded six saves and kept a clean sheet in 90 minutes of work. Her counterpart from Marian Claire Gavin recorded eight saves and allowed just one Sycamore goal.

Freshman Anna Holcombe scored the game winner in the 48th minute when she hit a shot from 18 yards out and it struck the back of the net to give the Sycamores the 1-0 cushion they would make hold up for the entire contest.

Marian's best shot at scoring came in the match's first two minutes when a wide open 1-on-1 shot bounced off the bottom of the cross bar and harmlessly to the ground.

For the second consecutive match, the Sycamores were led in shots by freshman Celeste Wahlberg who had eight shots, including three on goal. Holcombe tallied five shots, including a pair on goal. Sidney Ewing posts three shots in the match, including a pair on goal. Olivia Sharar had a pair of shots in the game, including one on goal while Erin Sweda posted one shot on goal. All 19 of the Sycamores shots came from either freshmen or sophomores.

Corner kicks in the match were level at 5 while Marian was whistled for nine fouls while the Sycamores were slapped with six.

The Sycamores begin the 2019 campaign in earnest on Friday, August 23 when they travel to UMKC for the season opener in Kansas City, Mo. Kickoff is set for 8 pm (ET). The two-match road swing to begin the season concludes on Sunday, August 25 at Saint Louis. The match against the Billikens begins at 2 pm (ET).
