TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Men's and Women's Track & Field teams both finished up the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships with third place team finishes on a chilly Sunday.
Â
The Sycamore men took third with 129.5 points, falling only to Illinois State (131.25) and Northern Iowa (183.25) while defeating Southern Illinois (125.5), Drake (87.25), Loyola (74), Bradley (70), Valparaiso (11.5) and Evansville (6). The women also took third, tallying 132.5 points while losing to Southern Illinois (176) and Illinois State (191). They overtook Northern Iowa (100.5), Missouri State (75), Loyola (70), Drake (34), Bradley (31), Valparaiso (4.5) and Evansville (3.5).
Â
Brooke Moore had a stellar day on the track on Championship Sunday that included a title and another All-MVC honor. Her day started with a dominant performance in the women's 1500-meter run where she clocked a time of 4:29.57 for the title. She then turned around and raced her way to a third place finish and All-MVC honors in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.76.
Â
All-MVC performances were the theme for Indiana State in the 1500-meter run, as
Jocelyn Quiles raced right with the lead group to earn her first-ever All-Valley honor in third with a time of 4:31.77, a six second improvement from her preliminary round time of 4:37.95. She also claimed four points later in the meet during women's 5K, placing fifth overall with a time of 17:03.72. Â
Â
As if Saturday's hammer throw title wasn't thrilling enough,
Erin Reese continued her MVC dominance in the throwing events with her first discus throw title. The redshirt senior, who entered the contest in second in the Valley, edged out Sydney Laufenberg of Illinois State with a throw of 53.85m (176-08) to claim the title. Thanks to her performances over the weekend, she was named the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the meet.
Â
One area where the Trees made their money on Sunday was the hurdles. Freshman hurdler
Matthew Lewis-Banks got the action started with a second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line 14.13 for All-MVC honors. His teammates,
Tremaine Gonzalez and
Avery Taylor, took fifth and sixth with times of 14.55 and 14.75, respectively.
Â
Transitioning to the women's 100-meter hurdles,
Ayanna Morgan also hurdled to a runner-up finish for All-Valley honors behind an impressive time of 13.83, falling only to Demetria Anderson of Illinois State.
Caitlyn Redmon wasn't too far behind her, racing across the line in fourth at 14.30.
Â
The hurdles were only the second part of the duo's day, however. Prior to the finals, Morgan and Redmon were incredible in the women's long jump that had been delayed from Saturday evening. Morgan jumper her way to a second place finish at 5.99m (19-08.00) and Redmon took home bronze with a mark of 5.94m (19-06.00) to give both athletes All-MVC honors.
Tasjia Thomas also scored in the long jump, locking up eighth with a mark of 5.60m (18-04.50).
Â
The best sprinter performance of the day came from sophomore
Jarel Shaw. His growth from year one to year two was on full display in the 100-meter dash finals, as he earned his first-ever All-MVC honor by finishing second and clocking a time of 10.61, falling only to the 60-meter dash indoor champion Kundai Maguranyanga of Drake.
Â
Nine points were scored by the women in the 400-meter dash with
Jezel Martin leading the charge with All-MVC honors in third place behind a strong performance of 55.28 as a result of a late charge.
Imani Davis also brought home points in the event with a finish of sixth and time of 57.08.
Â
Two days after an exhausting 10K in the pouring rain, distance standout
Akis Medrano made his return to the track in the men's 5K. Hanging tough throughout the competition, Medrano earned his second medal behind a third place performance where he clocked a time of 14:24.90. He wasn't the lone scorer in the men's section of the 5K, as
Ryan Cash came through with a point in eighth place and a time of 14:43.88.
Â
Racing with Moore in the women's 800-meter run finals,
Rebecca Odusola placed right behind her in fourth with a finals time of 2:11.68 to earn an additional five points for ISU.
Â
Senior
DeAndra Greer was the lone representative in the women's 100-meter dash finals on Sunday, and she didn't let her teammates down. Greer sprinted her way to a fourth place finish with a strong time of 11.72 to gain five points.
Â
Greer was also a catalyst for the women's 4x100-meter relay team that also featured Morgan,
Faith Lindsey and
Shana Cooper. Entering the final leg of the race in a battle with the middle of the pack, Greer found a new gear and willed the team to a second place finish and time of 46.32.
Â
In a show of determination,
Kaleb Budde stumbled over a hurdle in the 400-meter hurdles and fell back in the field. Despite his fall, the sophomore battled back to take fourth with a time of 53.46.
Richard Griffith also scored in the event, taking sixth at 55.47.
Â
It was a gutsy performance from sophomore
Cale Kilian in the men's 1500-meter run. Stacked up against some of the best mid-distance runners in the Valley, Kilian battled to a fifth place finish and time of 3:54.94 which was a six second improvement from prelims.
Â
After the exciting events in the women's long jump in the morning, the lone women's triple jump in ISU gear, Thomas, represented the Trees well by finishing in fifth with a mark of 11.63m (38-02.00) to give the team four points. Her counterpoint on the men's side,
Dearis Herron, also took fifth with a jump of 14.06m (46-01.50).
Â
Another pair of points came from the pole vault for the Sycamores on Sunday afternoon. The freshman made an impact with a seventh place finish and vault of 3.40m (11-01.75).
Â
Cassaundra Roper came out determined to contribute to her team's success on Sunday, as she fought hard to score a point in the women's discus throw with an eighth place finish and mark of 45.49m (149-03).
Â
During the very first event of the day, the men's 4x100-meter relay comprised of Shaw,
James Mitchell,
Jordan Moothery and
Kaleb Budde took home sixth with a time 42.04.
Â
Chaos consumed the track during the men's 4x400-meter relay; a race that featured a dropped handoff, a collision at the second handoff and a tumble during the last leg. Ultimately, the ISU team composed of
Avery Taylor, Lewis-Banks, Budde and Griffith took fifth with a time of 3:26.08.
Â
In the final event on the track, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Imani Hall, Odusola, Martin and Davis scored five points for the blue and white with a fourth place finish and time of 3:53.20.
