Timely Hitting Pushes Sycamores Past Purdue to Sweep Season Series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State baseball team recorded the season sweep of Purdue Wednesday night on the road with a 4-3 victory over the Boilermakers to improve to 22-4 on the season and 6-1 against BIG 10 competition. The Sycamores also improved to 6-0 all-time at Alexander Field.

Nolan Brimbury scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth after leading off the inning with a double down the line in left in what was his first at bat of the season. Jake Means setup runners on the corners the next at bat before Romero Harris sent a ball to center field that was deep enough to score Brimbury on the sacrifice fly.

Similar to the home meeting between the two programs, ISU sent seven different arms to the mound during the staff day. Senior Tyler Ward earned the victory to improve to 2-0 on the year while Tyler Grauer picked up his fourth save of the season.

Means was the lone Sycamore to record multiple hits in the game while ISU outhit Purdue, 10-9 on the night. Four of ISU's hits came by way of doubles with Means, Harris, Brimbury and Dane Tofteland joining the action.

Max Klein struck out a pair of Boilermakers in two innings as he made his second start of the season. Jake Ridgway went two and a third innings, retiring four-straight Purdue batters in his outing.

It took Indiana State to the second to put a run on the scoreboard when Joe Boyle came around to score after singling to right field and going to third on a fielding error at second. Luke Fegen recorded his 12th RBI of the season with a sharply hit ball to left-center to plate Boyle.

Purdue (10-17) looked to answer ISU's run in the bottom half of the second after putting runners on the corners with one out, but the Sycamores had different plans. Tyler Powers sent a ball to centerfield which was caught by Fegen and thrown home to gun down the Nick Evarts at home after the first baseman led off the inning with a single to shortstop.

The Sycamores carried that momentum into the third as Jake Means led off the inning with his sixth double of the season on a ball off the wall in left. Senior Romero Harris brought Means home with a double down the line in left which would signal the end the day of Purdue's starting pitcher James Kulak.

Cleanup hitter Zac Fascia jumpstarted the Boilermaker fourth with a one-out single through the right side before cleanup man Ryan Howe picked up an RBI with a triple to the gap in left field. Sycamore hurler Austin Moralis would limit the damage and strand the tying run 90-feet away after an infield popup and a ground ball back to the mound.

Purdue would tie the game in the fifth inning of action. The Boilermakers picked up a leadoff single from Powers before the third baseman moved to third following a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Johnny Sage would send a ball to the wall in right field to score Powers before the Trees went to the bullpen for right-hander Jake Ridgway to close out the inning with a shallow fly ball to left-center.

It was the seventh inning when Purdue picked up their first lead of the season series against ISU. Purdue led off the inning with a walk, but as the Boilermakers looked to sacrifice the runner to second, Means charged to cover the bunt and made a strong throw to second to get the lead runner as Jordan Schaffer extended to make the catch and remain on the bag. Powers, who bunted would take second on a wild pitch before stealing third to setup Evan Albrecht for the sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run.

Purdue's Trent Johnson was charged with the loss after allowing the game-winning run in the ninth, falling to 0-2 on the year.

The Sycamores continue their BIG 10 tour as the team travels to Michigan State for a three-game series this weekend before a pair of midweek contests with Michigan next Tuesday and Wednesday.
