EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Indiana State baseball team lost its third extra-inning affair in its last five games Friday night in the series opener with Michigan State, 1-0, in 10 innings at Kobs Field. All five of Indiana State (22-5) losses have been one-run games -- three in extra innings.
Â
The Spartans executed a squeeze bunt up the first base line to perfection to walk off the Sycamores in what was MSU's first game under the lights in the programs history.
Â
Royce Ando took a 1-0 pitch from
Tyler Ward to right field for a single to open the 10th inning. Michigan State (6-21) then looked to sacrifice Ando into scoring position with a bunt that was fielded cleanly and thrown to second on a line, but the ball was dropped which allowed the Spartans to put runners at the corners with no outs. Nic Lacayo pushed a bunt to first base and the rest was history.
Â
A pitcher's duel throughout, Indiana struggled at the plate, notching just a pair of base hits in the ballgame -- one being a single by
Jake Means in the first inning and the other a single off the glove of MSU's third baseman that bounced into left from
Max Wright. ISU did not put a runner into scoring position until
Luke Fegen reached second in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice bunt after working a walk.
Â
Sycamore starting pitcher
Triston Polley was strong throughout, allowing five base hits in eight and a third innings while retiring three via strikeouts. The lefty retired seven-straight batters before a walk in the ninth.
Â
Mason Elra pitched one of the best games of the season for the Spartans, going nine complete innings and allowing just two runs while striking out six. Elra faced 31 hitters and threw 124 pitches in the no-decision. Indigo Diaz was credited with the win after tossing the 10th inning of action, moving to 1-3 on the year. Ward was charged with his first loss of the season, moving to 2-1 after allowing an unearned run.
Â
Michigan State outhit the Sycamores 7-2 in the game, led by Lacayo with three base hits, including the leadoff single in the 10th. Ando recorded two base hits for the Spartans.
Â
The Sycamores will look to even the series Saturday at 4 p.m. with right-hander
