DELAND, Fla. – Leslie Sims was 2-for-3, scored two runs and stole a base as Indiana State opened the 2019 season with a 6-4 win at Stetson Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Sycamores (1-0) never trailed but needed a three-run seventh inning to secure the win, withstanding a late rally by the host Hatters (0-1).
Becky Malchow (2-for-3) and
Bailey Martin (2-for-4) also recorded multiple hits for Indiana State with Sims and Martin recording the only extra-base hits for the Trees, both doubles.
Indiana State had a 3-2 lead entering the final frame and scored three runs, thanks in part to two Stetson errors, for a 6-2 advantage. Sims sparked the offense as she laid down a bunt with
Becky Malchow at first after a leadoff single. In an attempt to beat Sims speed, Stetson's throw sailed over the first baseman's head and into right field, allowing Malchow to score and sending Sims to third. A
Bailey Martin RBI double would score Sims and Martin would score two batters later on an RBI groundout by
Mallory Marsicek.
The Hatters began a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits with help from two Indiana State errors and had a chance to steal the win. Stetson had two runners in scoring position with the potential winning run at the plate and one out before
Arielle Blankenship (1-0) fanned a batter then forced a groundout to short to seal the win.
Tori Perkins (0-1) was charged with the loss in a complete game performance for Stetson, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Gabbi Schnaiter got the start for the Sycamores, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts as she pitched 4.2 innings in the no-decision.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
It may be a new year but it's the same ol'
Leslie Sims. The speedy second baseman was 2-for-3 at the plate, used her speed on a bunt to force a throwing error, scored twice, drove in a run and stole a base.
STAT OF THE GAME
Two Indiana State pitchers –
Gabbi Schnaiter and
Arielle Blankenship – combined for nine strikeouts against Stetson in the game with four different Hatters fanning twice. That is more than the Sycamore pitching staff recorded in any single game last season.
