DELAND, Fla. – Brooke Mann drove in three runs,
Tessa Sims recorded a win in her first collegiate appearance and Indiana State took advantage of five errors in a 10-2 win at Stetson Saturday afternoon. The win, which was secured in the five-inning, mercy rule game, secured a doubleheader sweep over the Hatters.
Â
Despite large offensive numbers – 10 runs on nine hits – the numbers were generated by opportunistic situations for the Sycamores (2-0). ISU stole two bases – both by
Leslie Sims – had six of their 10 runs scored due to an RBI and took advantage of five separate Stetson errors as the Hatters (0-2) would repeatedly commit mistakes from which they would not recover.
Â
Brooke Mann was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a game-high three RBIs while
Amanda Guercio was 2-for-2 with Indiana State's only extra base hit in the game, a double during the fourth inning that scored one of just two earned runs against Stetson.
Â
Indiana State would send seven different runners across the plate with three – Sims,
Mallory Marsicek and
Shaye Barton – scoring twice.
Â
But the speedy Leslie did not record the only notable performance of the game from Sims lineage. Her younger sister, Tessa (1-0), was credited with the win after pitching for 3.1 innings in relief, allowing only one run on two hits and striking out two.
Â
Jamie Tino (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing 10 runs (but only two earned) on nine hits, spending all five innings of the score-shortened game in the circle.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
While many Sycamores excelled at the plate, our tip of the cap (or visor) here goes out to freshman hurler
Tessa Sims. Not only did she claim a win in her first collegiate appearance, Tessa entered the game facing a challenging situation as she took the circle in the second inning faces bases loaded and escaped the inning after allowing just one run to cross the plate. She only allowed two hits in 13 batters faced in 3.1 innings pitched and provided a steady presence in the circle, striking out two.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Indiana State scored 10 runs in the game, reaching double figures in runs scored for the first time since March 11, 2018. ISU only hit the double figures mark in runs scored twice last season, both against Tennessee State.
