Sycamores Battle but Fall to Loyola in Four Sets

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Sycamore volleyball program battled against second place Loyola on Saturday, but a strong match by the Ramblers proved too much to overcome as Loyola claimed the victory, 3-1.
 
For the seventh time in eight matches, Nikkie White crossed the 10-dig threshold to lead the ISU offense. The junior ended her evening with 16 kills while also adding six block assists on the defensive side of the net.
 
Also with a solid performance on Saturday was Madeline Williams. Williams added nine kills to the Trees' total of 46. The middle blocker also contributed six block assists and one solo block to help ISU dominate the net. As a team, Indiana State hit .161 compared to the Ramblers'.182.
 
Redshirt senior Cassie Kawa joined White and Williams in the strong net defense, contributing five block assists to give the Sycamores' 12 total blocks on the evening. ISU held the edge in blocks, 12-11.
 
Four members of the blue and white also earned more than 10 digs in Chicago. Libero Melina Tedrow led the way with 19 digs and White added 12, giving her a double-double. Chloe Mason and Jade York both added 10 digs, giving ISU 63 digs. Loyola ended with 66 digs.
 
Like White, Mason earned a double-double on Saturday thanks to leading the team in the assist category with 21 to go along with her 10 digs. Mary Hannah Lewis also played a significant role in the setting game, adding 17 assists of her own.
 
The Sycamores now have a quick turnaround before their next match as they welcome Illinois State to the ISU Arena on Monday, Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
 
Set One - Loyola 25, Indiana State 21
  • Kuckkan and White led the offensive attack in set one for the blue and white, as each registered four kills and hitting over .300.
  • As a team, Indiana State hit .267 with 11 kills.
  • Defensively, York recorded four digs to lead the Trees while Kawa and Kuckkan each recorded one block assist.
 
Set Two - Indiana State 25, Loyola 23
  • The Sycamores were able to overcome an opening 6-1 run by the Ramblers to take the second set.
  • ISU tallied 14 kills while hitting .237 in the frame and was led by Williams with five.
  • Williams was stellar defensively as well, recording two block assists and a solo block to dominate the net.
  • In the setting game, Lewis and Mason both added six assists to their total.
  • Tedrow and York both pushed their dig total to five.
 
Set Three - Loyola 25, Indiana State 22
  • Indiana State struggled offensively in the third set, hitting just .077 with nine kills.
  • White pushed past the 10-dig threshold, extending her total to 12.
  • In addition to her 12 kills, White added three block assists to her stat line on defense.
  • Tedrow recorded four digs, giving her nine for the match.
 
Set Four - Loyola 25, Indiana State 21
  • The Trees continued to struggle on the offensive side of the net, hitting .095 with 12 kills.
  • Tedrow tallied 10 digs to lead the defensive effort for the blue and white.
  • ISU recorded three total blocks to keep control of the net.
