SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana State cross country went head-to-head with some of the top regional teams in the country on Friday at the Joe Piane Invitational where the women finished 17th as a team.
 
Cal State Fullerton took the 5K Gold Division race title on the women's side, scoring 131 points. The Sycamores placed 17th, tallying 384 and defeated Western Michigan (400), Kansas State (438), Nebraska-Omaha (476), Calvin (565), Illinois-Chicago (592), Valparaiso (698), Purdue Fort Wayne (734) and Green Bay (802).
 
The women were led by Alli Workman who took 38th overall with a time of 17:53.35 while Jocelyn Quiles was the only other Sycamore in the top-50, gaining seven positions over the last 1K and placing 41st at 17:58.33.
 
Also in the top-100 for the ISU women was senior Michaela Ward and sophomore Tara Cassidy. Ward crossed the finish line with a time of 18:19.84 in 76th place while Cassidy placed 86th at 18:26.62.
 
The Indiana State men raced five individuals in the five-mile Gold Division Race and sophomores Noah Hufnagel and Cale Kilian led the way in 28th and 59th while clocking times of 25:00.40 and 25:26.17, respectively.
 
Isaac Bentz was third for the blue and white, claiming 97th with a time of 26:00.64 and Justin Niederhaus took 134th at 26:50.58.
 
Both the men and women will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they host the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
