Gritty Sycamores Overtake Southern Illinois in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Indiana State showed grit on Saturday night in Carbondale, defeating Southern Illinois in five sets for their first five-set victory of the season.
 
Freshmen Chloe Mason and Taylor Shelton recorded their second double-doubles of the weekend against the Salukis. Mason surpassed the 30-assist threshold, tallying 32 assists on the evening to go along with 20 digs.
 
Shelton earned her double-double in the fifth and final set when she recorded three kills to help ISU pull away for the victory. In all, she ended the night with 11 kills and 14 digs.
 
Elsewhere on the offensive side Cassie Kawa had an impressive night, hitting .438 to go along with a season-high 15 kills. Nikkie White was close behind Kawa with 13 kills, but the junior chipped in four blocks as well.
 
SIU was led by Lindsey Paulsen on the offensive side of the net who recorded 15 kills while hiting .429.
 
Libero Melina Tedrow earned over 20 digs for the 10th time this season against the Salukis. The sophomore ended with 28 digs and five assists - she even got in on the offensive action with her first two kills of the season.
 
As a team, Indiana State led every major statistical category. ISU tallied 63 kills while hitting .243 and tallied 60 assists, nine service aces, 92 digs and 11 total blocks.
 
Southern Illinois hit .195 with 56 kills to go along with 54 assists, nine aces, 80 digs and 10 total blocks.
 
The Sycamores will return home next weekend when they host Northern Iowa and Drake in the ISU Arena.
 
Set One - Southern Illinois 25, Indiana State 20
  • Southern Illinois held an 18-13 advantage in the kills category while also hitting .298.
  • Kawa was stellar offensively, recording seven kills in the frame.
  • Mason led the way with 10 assists.
  • The Trees and Salukis both ended the frame with 22 digs.
 
Set Two - Indiana State 25, Southern Illinois 17
  • The Sycamores were solid offensively with 13 kills compared to Southern Illinois' eight.
  • Shelton led the offense with five kills.
  • Set two guaranteed another double-double for Mason as she surpassed double-digit digs with 13.
  • SIU only hit .044 for the frame.
  • Indiana State recorded four service aces, including two from Jade York.
 
Set Three - Southern Illinois 25, Indiana State 17
  • ISU hit .077 and tallied 10 kills while Southern Illinois hit .250 with 14 kills.
  • Tedrow surpassed the 20-dig mark for the 10th time this season.
  • As a team, the blue and white recorded 19 digs to SIU's 21.
  • White led the way on the offesnsive side of the net with three kills.
 
Set Four - Indiana State 25, Southern Illinois 17
  • The Indiana State offense was on-point during the fourth frame, as ISU hit .400 to go along with 14 kills and just two errors.
  • White played a big part in the Sycamore success, registering five kills.
  • Shelton and Tedrow both tallied five digs.
  • SIU hit .176 with 11 kills during the frame.
 
Set Five - Indiana State 15, Southern Illinois 9
  • Strong offense once again played a key role for ISU, as the Trees hit .400 with 13 kills in the final set.
  • Shelton and White both tallied three kills to help the Sycamores pull away.
  • Mason ended with five sets in the final frame.
  • ISU held a 12-7 edge in digs over the Salukis.
