TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Loyola entered Saturday night's match as the Missouri Valley Conference's preseason favorite with a road win in league play already to their credit. They exited with a 4-0 victory over Indiana State in front of 415 fans on cool, fall-like evening at Memorial Stadium.
Indiana State fell to 6-5-2, 0-2 MVC on the season while the Ramblers improved to 5-5-1, 2-0 MVC.Â
The two teams played even for the first 20 minutes as
Kathryn Besserman had a look at goal early in the contest but it would prove to be the Sycamores' only shot in the first 20 minutes.
Loyola broke through in the 21st minute when Jenna Szczesny took a throw in from Jenna Ross and made an athletic kick outside the frame of the goal as the ball eventually spun off her leg and into the back right corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
The Ramblers' Madison Laudeman put her first goal of the season on the scoreboard off a free kick after a Sycamore foul. The goal came in the 36th minute as Laudeman pushed the ball through traffic inside the box for the 2-0 lead.
Loyola would come right back in the 38th minute when Szczesny pushed a header off a free kick from Taylor Lambouris into the net for a 3-0 cushion. It was Szczesny's second goal of the match and her seventh of the season which tied her with the Sycamores'
Katie Wells for the Missouri Valley Conference lead.
The Sycamores came out on the attack in the second half and
Caitlyn Eddy took a shot on goal off a long free kick which sailed into the arms of Loyola's goalkeeper. In the 50th minute,
Pam Silies took a swing at the net but the ball dribbled wide right of the framework.
Indiana State's
Katie Wells took a shot on goal in the 56th minute which gave her 52 for her career and moved her into sole possession of fourth on ISU's all-time career chart.
Loyola extended their lead out to 4-0 in the 69th minute when Aleksa Tataryn took a rebound off the right post and put the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Tataryn's second of the season.
Hannah Sullivan faced eight shots on goal in the contest and recorded four saves.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when they travel to Missouri State for a 3 pm (ET) kickoff against the Bears. The game can be seen live nationally on ESPN+.
