Sycamores Post Huge Team Win At Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Sycamores completed an undefeated three-game road swing this week after earning a complete 2-0 team road victory over Wright State on Sunday afternoon. It was a mix of offensive and defensive success for the team as Katie Wells continued her strong week with her 14th career goal and Hannah Sullivan was strong in the second half as she once again posted a career-high tying six saves.

Indiana State improved to 3-2-2 on the season, winning matches at Illinois-Chicago and Wright State this week while earning the draw on Friday night at Toledo. The Raiders dropped to 0-5-1 on the season. It was the Sycamores' first victory over Wright State in three tries and the program's first win in the state of Ohio since a win over Cleveland State in 2006.

The last time the Sycamores went three consecutive road matches without a defeat came in 2015 when ISU won at Western Illinois on October 4, tied at Northern Iowa on October 18 and then won 2-0 at Loyola on October 24. That is also the last season in which the Sycamores won three road games in a single season -- a feat this year's squad has already accomplished.

Indiana State was extremely active on the offensive end during the first half and were particularly successful with getting corner kicks as they had four of the first five opportunities of the match. But the Sycamores' first half didn't come on a corner kick, instead it was a free kick. In the 37th minute, Jazlyn Rowan was taken down and a foul was whistled which set up senior Katie Wells for a long free kick. She struck the ball well from 30 yards out and over all defenders and into the back left corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Wright State goal keeper Maddie Jewel.

The goal from Wells was her second of the year as well the 14th of her career. She is now just one goal behind Kate Johnson and Alison Gasparovich to tie for No. 6 on the ISU all-time list. She now has 42 points in her career which moved her past Kate Johnson for No. 6 on the Indiana State career points scored list. She is five points behind Claire Hemkens to move into the Sycamores' all-time Top 5.

Hannah Sullivan came up big for the Sycamores in the 57th minute after Sarah Clancy was whistled for a foul in the penalty box. That gave the Raiders' Aaliyah Patten a penalty kick which she tried to sneak into the lower right corner of the net. Sullivan read the shot well off the foot and made a dive to her left and right into the ball for a big save which saved the 1-0 advantage. The save was key as she posted her third shutout of the season.

Indiana State got an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Katie Sidloski found an open Jazlyn Rowan who went 1-on-1 with the goal keeper and snuck the ball on the ground into the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead. It marked Rowan's first career goal and was Sidloski's second assist of the season.

Sullivan was terrific again in the 87th minute as she was challenged by a shot on goal that traveled through traffic and bounced high in front of the goal. Sullivan skied high and caught a glove on the ball to push it over the net for her sixth save of the contest.

Wright State finished the match with an 13-7 edge in shots, including a 6-4 mark in shots on goal. Sullivan came up big on the defensive end as she recorded five saves in the contest, including one on a Raiders penalty kick. The Sycamores held an early advantage in corner kicks, but they finished level at six for each side.

Caitlyn Eddy posted two shots in the first 10 minutes but had to leave the match early after taking an opponent's knee to her head. Sidloski, Wells, Kathryn Besserman, Rowan and Alina Steffen each had one shot while Sidloski, Wells, Rowan and Steffen had shots on goal.

Indiana State has one more road match to conclude the eight-game regular season road swing to begin the year when they travel to nearby Eastern Illinois on Friday, September 7. Kickoff is set for 4 pm (ET) from Charleston, Ill.
