TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon for women's college soccer and a beautiful day for the Sycamores' offense as they scored early and often en route to a decisive 8-0 victory over visiting Chicago State at Memorial Stadium.
Indiana State improved to 6-3-2 on the season while Chicago State fell to 0-7-1. The Sycamores are now a perfect 5-0 all-time against Chicago State, defeating them by a cumulative score fo 34-2. Indiana State's eight goals scored are the second most in a single match in program history and the most ever against NCAA Division I competition. The only other match with more Sycamore goals came on October 12, 2008 when Indiana State earned a 9-0 victory over Oakland City.
Although not their final time at Memorial Stadium in a Sycamore uniform, seniors
Maya Jamison,
Julia Kist,
Kim Gleason,
Caitlyn Eddy and
Katie Wells were honored on Senior Day in pregame ceremonies.
Not to be lost in the offensive explosion was the steady play of junior goalkeeper
Hannah Sullivan who recorded five saves in her own right and posted her fifth shutout of the season. She is now allowing less than a goal per match this season.
The Sycamores scored early when freshman
Sidney Ewing stole possession of the ball and hit a bullet into the back of the net for 25 yards away for the quick 1-0 lead. The goal came just 2:40 into the match -- proving to be the fifth-fastest goal in the history of the program.
Katie Wells took a free kick after a Cougar foul about 22 yards from the goal with 7:28 remaining. The ball was placed on the left side of the field and Wells moved quickly to address the ball before Chicago State was completely set and buried the ball into the right corner of the net and the Sycamores were rolling 2-0. The goal made it six matches in a row for Wells with at least one point scored. She would finish with five points in this contest.Â
Wells' two goals on Senior Day moved her into a tie for 3rd on the ISU all-time goals scored list with 19. She now needs one more to tie Maddie Orf for second and is now tied with Nichole Tiggs and Claire Hemkens. Her 56 points inched her ahead into second place all-time for career points scored and is 14 away from Lauren Podolski for the school record. Wells now has 18 career assists, just two of Podolski's school record. Her 0.89 points per match average over 63 played is second all-time at ISU. Her seven goals and 20 points scored on the season both lead the Missouri Valley Conference.
Alina Steffen stepped up next for the Sycamores as she scored for the second consecutive contest. In the 20th minute, Steffen took a cross pass from Ewing where she found an open goal and punched the ball into the back of the net. It was Steffen's third goal of the season.
In the 24th minute,
Sarah Clancy took possession of the ball on the defensive side of the field. She made a long pass down the sideline and found Wells who then snuck past the Cougar defense and dribbled towards the goal. She was contested inside the box and made a shifty move past one defender, changed control of the ball with her feet and pounded the net for the second time in the contest. That Wells goal staked the Sycamores to a 4-0 lead, the most goals this season for Indiana State in one half of play.
The Sycamore offense geared up again in the 61st minute when
Katie Sidloski took a corner kick and her cross pass entered the box with pinpoint accuracy. Past the mass of humanity in front of the goal, the ball found the head of sophomore
Danielle Varner who used her height advantage to rise above the crowd and a header found the back of the net as Indiana State led the Cougars, 5-0.
Jazlyn Rowan scored her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute when
Natalie Kesselring attempted a swing as the Cougar goalkeeper tried to smoother the ball. The ball snuck out of her grasp and Rowan took control. From there she dribbled ahead five yards and found the back of the net to push the Indiana State lead to 6-0.
ISU was fouled once again just outside the box in the 78th minute. Sidloski got in on the goal scoring action when she took the ensuing free kick from 19 yards out and got the ball past the goal keeper for the Sycamores' seventh goal. In the 83rd minute, the Sycamores put together a beauty as Wells took the ball at midfield and swung it out wide to Ewing. Ewing charged the net with the ball and swung hard to push the ball across the line as ISU earned the 8-0 victory.
The Sycamores owned the stat sheet with a 30-8 edge in shots, including a 21-5 cushion in shots on goal. ISU had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
Ewing led the Sycamores with five shots while senior
Caitlyn Eddy made four attempts. Wells, Steffen and Kesselring each owned three while Sidloski,
Alise Emser,
Pam Silies,
Julia Kist and
Kim Gleason each had two shots. Varner and Rowan each had one shot attempt in the match.
Indiana State wraps non-conference play with a 6-3-2 record and now turn their attention to the Missouri Valley Conference schedule. ISU will travel to Evansville on Saturday, September 22 to open MVC play against the Purple Aces. The match will kick-off at 2 pm (ET) and will be shown live worldwide on ESPN3.
