IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Indiana State followed up an offensive breakout at SIU Edwardsville on Friday night with their third stellar defensive showing in a row. But one goal from Iowa midway through the second half proved to be the difference as the Sycamores fell 1-0 to Iowa on a humid Sunday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Indiana State fell to 1-2-1 on the season while the Hawkeyes improved to 2-0-1. It was the first matchup between the two programs as ISU was looking for the first victory over a Big Ten program since a win over Illinois in 2005.
In the 65th minute, Iowa's Rose Ripslinger handled a cross from Sara Wheaton to break the tie and give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.
Hannah Sullivan continued her strong play as she faced seven shots on goal and made a career high tying six saves in the contest. Iowa had two really good looks at goal before Ripslinger reached the back of the net as Sullivan got the tips of her fingers on a free kick attempt just outside of the box and also got some help from
Caitlyn Eddy on a back save just before Iowa eventually scored.
Iowa held a 13-3 edge in shots, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Katie Sidloski,
Sidney Ewing and
Jordan Denton each had shots with Ewing and Sidloski owning shots on goal. The Hawkeyes enjoyed a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Sycamores return to action on Wednesday, August 29 when they travel to Illinois-Chicago. Kick-off is set for 8 pm (ET) and will be televised live nationally on ESPN+.
